The researchers first analyzed satellite data of the landscape influenced by the Indus and neighboring rivers. From 2003 to 2008, the researchers then collected samples of sediment from the coast of the Arabian Sea into the fertile irrigated valleys of Punjab and the northern Thar Desert to determine the origins and ages of those sediments and develop a timeline of landscape changes.

"It was challenging working in the desert ? temperatures were over 110 degrees Fahrenheit all day long (43 degrees C)," Giosan recalled.

After collecting data on geological history, "we could reexamine what we know about settlements, what crops people were planting and when, and how both agriculture and settlement patterns changed," said researcher Dorian Fuller, an archaeologist with University College London. "This brought new insights into the process of eastward population shift, the change towards many more small farming communities, and the decline of cities during late Harappan times."

Some had suggested that the Harappan heartland received its waters from a large glacier-fed Himalayan river, thought by some to be the Sarasvati, a sacred river of Hindu mythology. However, the researchers found that only rivers fed by monsoon rains flowed through the region.

Previous studies suggest the Ghaggar, an intermittent river that flows only during strong monsoons, may best approximate the location of the Sarasvati. Archaeological evidence suggested the river, which dissipates into the desert along the dried course of Hakra valley, was home to intensive settlement during Harappan times.

"We think we settled a long controversy about the mythic Sarasvati River," Giosan said.

Initially, the monsoon-drenched rivers the researchers identified were prone to devastating floods. Over time, monsoons weakened, enabling agriculture and civilization to flourish along flood-fed riverbanks for nearly 2,000 years.

"The insolation ? the solar energy received by the Earth from the sun ? varies in cycles, which can impact monsoons," Giosan said. "In the last 10,000 years, the Northern Hemisphere had the highest insolation from 7,000 to 5,000 years ago, and since then insolation there decreased. All climate on Earth is driven by the sun, and so the monsoons were affected by the lower insolation, decreasing in force. Eventually, these monsoon-based rivers held too little water and dried, making them unfavorable for civilization.

"The Harappans were an enterprising people taking advantage of a window of opportunity ? a kind of "Goldilocks civilization," Giosan said.

This change would have spelled disaster for the cities of the Indus, which were built on the large surpluses seen during the earlier, wetter era. The dispersal of the population to the east would have meant there was no longer a concentrated workforce to support urbanism.

"Cities collapsed, but smaller agricultural communities were sustainable and flourished," Fuller said. "Many of the urban arts, such as writing, faded away, but agriculture continued and actually diversified."

These findings could help guide future archaeological explorations of the Indus civilization. Researchers can now better guess which settlements might have been more significant, based on their relationships with rivers, Giosan said.

It remains uncertain how monsoons will react to modern climate change. "If we take the devastating floods that caused the largest humanitarian disaster in Pakistan's history as a sign of increased monsoon activity, than this doesn't bode well for the region," Giosan said. "The region has the largest irrigation scheme in the world, and all those dams and channels would become obsolete in the face of the large floods an increased monsoon would bring."

"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega said. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.

As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim's face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.

Miami police have released few details about the attack, other than confirming that there had been a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Detective William Moreno said Sunday that neither man's identity had been determined. Messages left Monday for a police spokesman were not immediately returned.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. A spokeswoman said Monday that the hospital would not be releasing any information about him.

A surveillance video camera from The Miami Herald building nearby captured images of the men's naked legs lying side by side after the shooting.

Vega said the victim appeared gravely injured.

The expansion of China?s civilian nuclear energy plan rests on the approval of a plan by the Ministry of Environmental Protection that would increase the safety of the nation?s nuclear plants.

Female troops sue to break combat glass ceiling

Two female soldiers are suing the U.S. government over restrictions on women in combat, claiming that the policies violate their constitutional rights.

Bloomberg News reports that U.S. Army reservists Jane Baldwin and Ellen Haring filed the lawsuit against Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Army Secretary John McHugh.

The women argue that current policies infringe on their Fifth Amendment right to equal protection and restrict the potential for advancement in the Army.

For many soldiers, promotions are based on combat duty, and the women argue that because they have restricted combat assignments, their opportunity for promotion is limited, New York magazine reports.

The Army recently announced that it would consider allowing women into its elite Ranger School, but as of now, women are prohibited from joining the special forces or conducting long-range reconnaissance operations.

Women are currently forbidden from being on the front line of combat, but many woman argue that their jobs already place them in combat situations. The Army has circumvented its own policies by placing women with ground combat units.

A Pentagon spokesman said in an email that Panetta is ?strongly committed to examining the expansion of roles for women in the U.S. military, as evidenced by the recent step of opening up thousands of more assignments to women.?

Last week the Army opened more than 14,000 positions to women that were previously restricted.

Group: S.Sudan troops kill, torture minority tribe

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? South Sudan military forces tasked with carrying out a disarmament campaign among feuding ethnic groups are raping, torturing and killing members of a minority community, community leaders and aid workers say.

The disarmament campaign follows two outbreaks of violence linked to cattle raids between the Murle and Lou Nuer tribes over the last year in the remote state of Jonglei. Hundreds ? and likely more than 1,000 ? people were killed in the two clashes.

In an effort to stem future violence, the Sudan People's Liberation Army, South Sudan's military, embarked on a disarmament campaign in March in which more than 10,000 weapons have been taken so far, said military spokesman Col. Philip Aguer.

But aid groups and community members say the SPLA is killing and torturing members of the Murle, a tribe reviled by many other South Sudanese, while carrying out the disarmament campaign. Alleged abuses include simulated drownings, tying up young men to trees and beating them, and widespread rape against women.

The Murle appear to be ostracized by most other tribes in South Sudan in part because they received military support from leaders in Khartoum, Sudan, when the south and north battled in a two-decade civil war. The Murle also have a reputation for carrying out child abductions from other tribes and of conducting cattle raids that can results in hundreds of human deaths and tens of thousands of stolen cattle.

Allegations of abuse during the disarmament campaign are being investigated by military lawyers, Aguer said.

A state government report dated March 30 and obtained by The Associated Press listed some of the deaths: James Kengen Logidang was killed at home while sitting in a chair. Korok Manyngar Kengen, 15, was killed as his cattle were being stolen by SPLA soldiers. "The boy didn't have a gun," the report said.

The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, said it has treated 30 patients since mid-March who suffered injuries from the disarmament campaign. Two have since died. Three patients had gunshot wounds and 26 had trauma injuries from beatings, the group said.

Aid groups contend that such numbers are underreported because most of the attacks take place in remote areas.

The disarmament campaign began as a voluntary handing over of guns, and then was to move into a compulsory phase, though military leaders have since said the voluntary phase would continue. Aid groups question whether the process is truly voluntary.

Peter Guzulu, a member of the Murle community, said at least 10 people have been killed "for no apparent reason." An 11th death took place against a male running from soldiers with a rifle in hand, he said.

Guzulu was the chairman of the government-run Jonglei Human Rights Commission from September 2010 until mid-March, when he said he was dismissed by the governor but wasn't told why. Guzulu believes he was removed "so I didn't talk to journalists or write reports."

"People are being beat in the towns and villages. They are told to confess to having guns. Women are beaten. Some are raped. When is this torture going to end? That is the question people ask all the time," he said.

Aguer said all communities in Jonglei are being disarmed. He said the Murle have the most weapons and that some members are heading into Ethiopia to keep their AK-47 assault rifles.

A report published last month by five aid groups, including Washington D.C.-based Pact and the South Sudan Law Society, said the current disarmament campaign ? the fifth in Jonglei in the last six years ? risks perpetuating a cycle of violence that has seen thousands killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in recent years. If the Murle believe they are being forcibly targeted in the campaign, the report said, they will re-arm and seek revenge.

The report urges the U.N. to prioritize the protection of civilians.

A statement this month from the U.N.'s top representative in South Sudan, Hilde Johnson, commended the disarmament effort, but critics of the campaign say the U.N. mission in South Sudan is ignoring evidence of abuse and torture.

The U.N. said in April that a peaceful disarmament campaign that respects human rights is vital to ending the cyclical violence and noted that while cases of abuse and sexual violence have been reported they do not appear to be part of a systematic campaign.

Kouider Zerrouk, a spokesman for the U.N. mission, said the U.N. has no way of knowing how many cases of abuse have occurred.

"These human rights violations are serious and are a concern for us," Zerrouk said. "But if we look into the whole process covering the whole region as big as Bangladesh, yes, generally it went in a peaceful manner in the sense that there was no outbreak of major clashes between communities."

Aguer said the disarmament campaign would continue for the rest of the year.

Judy McCallum, the former head in South Sudan of the aid group Pact, said the Murle are "basically under siege" by the government and military. She added that Murle youth are "out of control" ? a reference to cattle-raiding attacks ? but have no path to improve their lives.

Aid groups, McCallum said, are reporting systemic rape and drownsings. "Everyone I talk to say women are being raped constantly. So there's no incentive to give up their guns," she said. She said there is impunity for violence against the Murle.

McCallum said the U.N. is overemphasizing the success of the disarmament campaign and does not appear to be adequately concerned with the protection of civilians.

Minority Rights Group International on Thursday released new rankings of peoples under threat. South Sudan ? which broke away from Sudan last year to become the world's newest nation ? ranked in the top 10 because of the Murle-Lou Nuer violence.

In December and January, members of the Lou Nuer community attacked the Murle, likely killing hundreds of people. That attack came in retaliation for an August attack by the Murle that killed at least 600.

4 Sleeps Till Mexico: Baby,Toddler & Family Checklist ? le petit r?ve

Whut whuuuuuut.

Lately I?ve teetering on this edge on this precipice leading to doom. The kind of doom that smells distinctly of burning. Or rather burn-out. Which is why I can barely contain my anticipation to borad a plane bound for the Riviera Mayan. It?s our first vacation as a family of four. It?s the first time the mister and I have ever ben to an all inclusive resort together. So thanks sister-in-law for having a destination wedding!

Packing up for a week of sun and sand with two littles is no easy feat, that which I can more or less glean. We?ve packed up our van many a time fore more local road-tripping, camping or touring with the mister with his band when accommodations and locations allow. This trip however ? logically calls for some extra special organizing and planning. Which should all start from a list, right?

Lists are shiny, golden paths to success. For those who don?t know that?y?all get with the program! So, this shall be my own personal list that I share with all of you momma?s out there who are about to embark on a similar journey with smalls in tow.

Top 10 List Packer For Those With Littles: By Land, By Plane, By Beach

1. iPad, iPhones and MacBooks.?(We?ll also be working ever so slightly. Thus, the life of a an entrepreneur. There is no such thing as a true vacation.) Also??Straight up not gonna even pretend we?re going to make crafts and sing songs the entire time we?re on the plane or in the car. Big ?ole, yea right!? To that one. On that note, earphones.
2. Clothing for the littles: Lots of onsies for Abby, sundresses and rompers. Lots of shorts and t-shirts and tanks for Wyndham. A couple pairs of socks for each and a couple pairs of p.j.?s It?s stinkin? hot in Mexico this time of year, so most nights they?ll be sleeping in nothing but a dipe. 1 pair of kicks and sandals for Wyndham. SUN-HATS and swimsuits. 1 hoody or sweater, 1 long sleeve and one pair of pants/leggings for each of them. Just in case. Abby?s moccasins and sandals. Abby?s hair?accessories. If I forget them she?ll be seriously peeved. All 10 months of her. Their wedding outfits.
3. Clothing for us. I dont need to go into too much detail here, just aiming for coolness and comfort, with a modicum of style and enough knickers to last the week. I?ll probably need an?embarrassing?amount of time to pick out a few shoes/sandals. Not a whole bag of them like I did when I went to Blissdom. Ahem. (It was a small bag. Sayin?.) I should also remember our swimsuits,?and our stylin? straw sun-hats. No, they don?t match.
4. Toiletries. The regular stuff and above all else:?natural sunblock for the kiddies, our face and body sunscreens and aloe vera gel ? just in case. I always pack toiletries in big ziplock bags to avoid disaster. I?m sure there are some properly nifty zip up bags for this action, which I don?t need to wander around finding at this point in time. I still haven?t found a dress for the wedding. The mister and I are the hosts. Need dress now. Whatever hair?accessories/product I deem necessary to keep my soon to be frazzled and curly au naturel beach fro looking sexy, wild and hawt. That?s what I?m going for.
5. Ergo carrier and a sling. Absolute must haves. Slings are so thin, they barely need any packing room ? and are the fastest, coolest (less fabric), choice in baby-wearing. Minimal support = great for short wearing time. The ergo is best for longer wearing periods and also sports that dandy sun cover.
6. A few favourite (small) toys and books. Also, crayons, markers, stickers and construction paper. A travel craft kit containing some pipe cleaners, a small glue, washi tape, some popsicle sticks, small pop poms, feathers, a few sheets of tissue paper, a couple of bingo dabbers, macaroni, string and toddler scissors. We?ll miss the paint for the week, but something tells me we?ll be just fine. The resort we are staying at has a toy rental system and an awesome Fisher Price playroom. Plus, you know ? we are on the Mayan Riviera! Hello!
7. Diapers,?swim diapers?and wipes.?Lots of wipes. Enough for the week. That?s right, you heard me ? disposable diapers. We are a cloth diapering family at home and when on vacation sans washer and dryer? Hello disposables.
8. Ready-made bottles for our time traveling, (Abby), water for both and milk for Wyndham. Wyndham has his own thermos for his drinks and according to TSA Standards, we should be all good. Additional liquids needed for babies and toddlers may be packed in checked bags. 9. Night light and duct tape (for taping up cords and covering outlets in our suite). Candles, smudge, and our mini Boombox portable speaker.
10. Snacks, baby food, etc. We have a few staples that I am not sure of whether or not we will have immediate access to. For example, avocados (have every nutrient we humans need!) and?bananas are like calming magic food -?especially?with a tired or low-sugar wailing toddler. Our other top staples are PC organic rice husks and their fruit/veggie soft and chewy snacks. These will be key for lift offs and landings to keep little mouths working to ward off ear pain, which I myself am?susceptible?to. We don?t really need to worry about bringing?pureed baby food for Abby, she latched on to baby-led weaning at around 8 months and hasn?t looked back. We are aware that the food at the resort probably won?t have the organic fruits and veggies we are used to ? so we will just roll with it.

There could be a number 11 on this list?a stroller. I am not sold on bringing one at this point. Everyone is saying yes, so perhaps I should listen. It?s just that Abby loves to be worn and our stroller will just add to the stuff we need to check in, lug around etc. I would really appreciate your advice on this subject. There you go! I?m asking for advice! Have at it!
