Minding Their Own Beeswax

New York has witnessed an uptick in honeybee swarms this spring, reversing a long decline in the honeybee population and keeping the NYPD?s bee expert very busy. How busy are bees, really?

They?re pretty industrious but not as busy as some other animals. A honeybee might work anywhere from just a few hours a day to about 12, depending on its role in the beehive. For example, worker bees tasked with the daily foraging of nectar or pollen generally spend nearly every hour of daylight outside?but as soon as it gets dark they get to head back to the nest and relax. (Honeybees don?t sleep the same way that humans do?they don?t have eyelids, for one?but they do stop moving, relax their muscles, and let their antennae gradually slump.) Worker bees whose duties lie within the nest don?t have it easy, either?they stay a little busy around the clock, tending to the honeycombs, fanning their wings to keep the nest cool, but they do take frequent breaks. Queens are also busy, if relatively immobile, laying more than 1,000 eggs each day. Drones, by contrast, are quite lazy. They don?t leave the hive until early afternoon, at which time they carouse around in packs, and when they get home just a few hours later, they rely on the worker bees to feed them.

To remain as efficient as possible, bees take the day off when there?s ugly weather?if the temperature drops into the 50s, or if it looks like it?s going to rain, or if there are strong winds (above about 15 mph). Also on cold winter days, honeybees stay back in the hive, where they clump together to stay warm?though staying warm, which involves bees taking turns buzzing their wings to warm the others, is a lot of work. On the other hand, on nice days honeybees may be asked to work overtime: If the flowers are particularly rich with nectar, or if there?s lots of pollen that?s ripe for collection, forager bees will go back to the hive to recruit even more numbers.

Two Chinese fireworks factories explode

BEIJING | June 19, 2012

Explosions at two fireworks factories in China left 14 people dead and 13 injured, authorities said.

Seven people died and a dozen were hurt in a 10:30 a.m. blast at the Dongtun fireworks factory in Huaivang County in central China's Henan province, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

An explosion at the Longfa fireworks factory in Yichun, Jiangxi province, in eastern China about 4 p.m. Sunday killed seven workers and injured one, Xinhua said.

Investigations were under way into the causes of the explosions.

Local authorities issued a statement saying the workers in the Dongtun plant had been producing fireworks illegally because its production license had expired. The factory owner was away on a business trip and police were holding the owner's family, Xinhua said.

The privately owned Longfa plant is licensed, Xinhua said.

Mass. nuclear plant, union, reach contract deal

PLYMOUTH, Mass.?Management at the Pilgrim nuclear plant in Plymouth and unionized workers have reached a tentative contract agreement.

The Utility Workers Union of America Local 369 announced the agreement early Tuesday morning. Union membership is scheduled to vote on the proposal Wednesday.

Union president Dan Hurley said in a statement that the contract "has important protections" for the workers.

Entergy executive Robert Smith called the four-year labor contract "fair and equitable."

No details were released.

Contract negotiations had stalled over health care costs and working conditions.

The dispute became contentious with plant owner Entergy Corp. locking out union workers and the union filing labor complaints with the National Labor Relations Board.

In response to the agreement, the union said a rally outside the Statehouse planned for Tuesday had been cancelled.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? These are heady days in Myanmar's newsrooms, many of them staffed by young women like those at Kumudra newspaper nicknamed after "Charlie's Angels" for their tenacity in holding the military-dominated government to account.

Reporters and editors are suddenly enjoying remarkable press freedom, as the country's new, nominally civilian government launches a rapid succession of reforms, but they also fear they may be inadequately prepared as they enter uncharted, potentially hazardous territory.

The country's mushrooming media is poised at the crossroads. Media censorship is due to end this month. But journalists fret that the censorship may be replaced by new kinds of repression, including crackdowns ? after the fact ? over stories that previously would simply never have been published.

"With censorship, we knew our limits. In a way it protected us. Now we will be exposed," said Nyein Nyein Naing of the 7Day Journal. "We will need to be more careful, accurate and responsible."

Surveying her newsroom, the 29-year-old co-chief editor said she was concerned that the end of censorship could prove a minefield, with officials and others ready to slap lawsuits on independent media prone to error. Some have already been lodged.

Journalists also are concerned about the government's plans to introduce a wide-ranging media law ? details of which have been kept secret so far ? as well as the expected influence of powerful Myanmar tycoons with ties to the country's former military leaders, known locally as the "cronies," who are buying up newspapers and other media.

Myanmar's abysmal education system has produced many eager but untrained journalists. Editors complain that some can't even write a decent sentence in Burmese.

"They are trying very hard and are often good reporters but their writing is a disaster," says Ye Naing Moe, a reporter and one of the country's few qualified trainers. "It's like buying good meat at the market but not knowing how to cook it."

From a handful of weekly newspapers a decade ago, there are now more than 150. Having upgraded from hole-in-the wall, rat-infested operations, some have gleaming newsrooms with the latest-model computers, but lag far behind in training the influx of new reporters and editors. And many will be hiring even more once the government starts allowing daily newspapers later this year.

But optimism runs high.

Although pay is still low ? cub reporters earn about $80 a month ? the profession is increasingly respected and attracts some of the best and brightest when earlier aspiring journalists ? viewed as government mouthpieces ? risked being kicked out of their family homes and told to get a real job.

William Chen, publisher of the Kumudra and Modern newspapers, says many of the recruits are women. His own reporting staff ? locally known as "William's Angels" ? is 90 percent female, with most in their 20s. More than half the reporters at 7Day, at 145,000 the country's largest-circulation paper, are women.

"They're more loyal, hardworking and responsible than most males," Chen says, also noting that men have more job options.

Despite the shortcomings, Jeff Hodson, an American who has trained Southeast Asian journalists for more than a decade, says those in Myanmar are among the region's most passionate and hardest-working despite the country's half-century of isolation, iron-fisted military rule and economic stagnation.

"Their biggest achievement has been their refusal to give up hope in the face of overwhelming press restrictions. They've steadily carved out a space for freedom of expression, step by step," he said.

This month, Ye Naing Moe and four colleagues slipped into Kachin territory to tell the rebel side of the story in a brutal civil war against the Myanmar government. Not long ago, they would almost certainly have served a harsh prison sentence for violating an act forbidding "contact with illegal organizations." They received only a mild rebuke.

"These days we don't care about censorship at all. We just go ahead and publish stories," said Nyein Nyein Naing, proudly displaying Ye Naing Moe's front page story along with another once forbidden item ? the photograph of an anti-government demonstration.

Once highly taboo images of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, released from house arrest 19 months ago and currently on a tour of Europe where she belatedly accepted her Nobel Peace Prize, are now routinely displayed in all but state-controlled media.

Recent coverage of other previously taboo topics includes labor unrest at a Taiwanese garments factory and sectarian violence between Buddhists and minority Rohingya Muslims.

The censorship board used to strike out words, and even entire stories, with red ink and shut down newspapers temporarily for violations. But censors have relaxed their grip in recent months.

"When I started working in the media, we could not even mention the word 'democracy.' The progress we have made is huge," Ye Naing Moe said, noting that the government now blocks fewer Web sites than neighboring Thailand, a democracy.

Less than two years ago, journalists were tortured, imprisoned and subjected to constant surveillance. The last known imprisoned journalist was released in January.

However, journalists are concerned that a new government press council will become a watchdog on "those who cross the line" rather than an instrument to protect journalists, resolve conflicts and improve media standards. They're also deeply suspicious that entrenched hard-liners will roll back recent gains through the new media law.

UNESCO official Sardar Umar Alam says Myanmar's government has been surprisingly receptive to input from the U.N. cultural agency on the upcoming media law, and has sent teams to both Asian and Western nations to study similar legislation.

But that has done little to allay concerns of Myanmar's journalism community.

"Ideally no media law is the best media law. One way or another it will be a measure for control," said Nyan Lynn, a reporter and publisher.

The legislation is to be presented next month to Parliament, where amendments will be difficult because lawmakers allied with the military command a great majority.

Already controlling more than half the weeklies, businessmen connected to generals and other powerbrokers are expected to increase their dominance when daily papers are permitted and the higher operating costs push the poorer independents into bankruptcy.

"We will soon have to fight the cronies. We have to know how to compete. We have to be fit and ready to protect ourselves," says Nyan Lynn. The tycoon-owned papers, editors say, are drawing in talent by offering double or more the salaries of the independents.

But typical of a new bravado among journalists, Nyan Lynn will next month open a newspaper to focus on "issues the government needs to address urgently."

"We revealed the realities of Myanmar to the outside world," he said, describing how local journalists sent images of a 2007 Buddhist monk-led uprising to the outside world and how they have exposed irregularities ahead of the country's 2010 election.

"It's difficult to exactly measure the changes we brought about, but we did our job," Nyan Lynn said. "We made a difference."

Vampires vs. zombies: Who would win?

Photo: Stephen Vaughan / 20th Century Fox

Benjamin Walker plays Abraham Lincoln who moonlights as a vampire hunter in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."

By Cody Delistraty

Vampires and zombies will be forever pitted against one another. Between HBO?s ?True Blood? and AMC?s ?The Walking Dead,? this summer?s ?Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? and next year?s Brad Pitt-vehicle ?World War Z,? the dichotomy is only becoming clearer.

In the Tim Burton-produced film,?Honest Abe?is reimagined as a nighttime?vampire hunter, taking down blood-sucking evildoers. He?s the country?s finest leader during the day and the nation?s greatest assassin come nightfall.

Yet Lincoln himself may fall into the category of "vampire."

Like the blood-sucking creatures, he?s smart and charismatic, debonair and independent. He leads with adroit aplomb and destroys evil beings with sexy smoothness?-- his well-worn top hat earns him fashion points while the axe he so gracefully wields creates macabre destruction that?s pleasing to the aesthetically-discriminating eye.

If Lincoln were a zombie, he wouldn?t be able to create the beautiful chaos that Seth Grahame-Smith, author of the book on which the film is based, claims he brought about. He would be a myopic plodder, seeing blurry visions of incoming assailants, unable to retaliate with cunning or with any thought at all.?

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" comes out June 22nd.

?

This is not to underestimate the zombies of our society. While our presidents and philanthropists?are more vampire than zombie,?the world's movers and shakers are often?groups with a?common mission: take Occupy Wall Street, for example, or that?group of angry moms?who want?yet another stop sign in?the neighborhood.?These "zombies" achieve their missions in large groups, taking down mere individuals who stand in their way.??

In Marc Forster?s upcoming movie??World War Z,? the?task of stopping?a zombie?pandemic falls to Gerry Lane, a United Nations worker played by Brad Pitt. While the movie has been having its fair share of budget-related troubles as of late,?a zombie?apocalypse could spell out even greater trouble. Zombies, with their undead arms extended,?wreak havoc en masse, easily collecting a nearly unstoppable group hell-bent on mindless destruction -- a feat that eludes the self-absorbed, hedonistic vampires.

Lincoln may be a vampire but perhaps the real power lies in the masses -- groups that have a common goal, a common faith or a common enemy.

Director of ?Quantum of Solace,? Forster takes on this zombie idea?from?Max Brooks? novel of the same name with a sense of seriousness, telling the Los Angeles Times that the film has ?the grounded, gun metal realism of, say, Matt Damon?s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC?s ?The Walking Dead?.? In fact, ?World War Z? achieved such a serious realism that the Hungarian Anti-Terrorism Unit raided a warehouse that housed the film?s prop weapons?during shooting in Budapest, thinking they were smuggled weapons.

Clearly, zombies are serious business. So?who would come out on top if zombies and vampires faced off?

Initially, zombies would seem to be at a great disadvantage. Their lumbering, soulless bodies are often too slow and their lack of intelligence or rational thought makes them prone to falling for tricks and cleverness. However, while vampires are fast, seductive and smart, their egos can easily be exploited. They are obsessed with their own desires, putting their wants above any sense of morals or principle goodness; they're?easily corrupted and unable to control themselves.

Indeed, it?s extremely difficult to pick a winner between the two (but that hasn't stopped some from trying). ?World War Z? has an A-list actor and a budget nearly twice that of ?Vampire Hunter,? but that doesn?t mean ?Vampire Hunter? won?t be able to better market its witty concept to outdo ?World War Z? at the box office.

Who, then,?is superior??Heroic individuals like Lincoln? Or the inspired masses??

That's for you to decide, but?both films hold the vampire characteristics of sleek, seductive and funny.?They'll just need to channel their inner zombie?if they want to?attract the necessary hordes of excited theatergoers.

"Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter" opens June 22. "World War Z" was recently postponed until 2013.

Who do you think has the upper hand: vampires?or zombies? Will you see "Vampire Hunter" and/or "World War Z"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Doc on Chinese Activist-Artist Opens Human ... - Travel + Leisure

06.18.12

The 23rd annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival kicked off Friday night with the New York premiere of journalist and first-time director Alison Klayman?s documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. Intriguing as much as it is troubling, the film?which won audiences over at Sundance this year?looks at the life of the artist and political activist who pushes China to grapple with its own social and political shortcomings, and challenges the government?s capricious, heavy-handed approach to silencing political dissent.

For the next two weeks Lincoln Center?s Walter Reade Theater will be festival HQ, hosting a series of new films (14 New York debuts), panel discussions with experts and filmmakers, and an exhibition by South African photographer Brent Stirton, which investigates rights abuses committed against residents living near Papua New Guinea?s Porgera gold mine.

Focusing on five essential topics?health, development and the environment; LGBT and migrant?s rights; personal testimony and witnessing; reporting in crisis; and women?s rights?the uniting theme at this year?s festival is the power of the individual to impact change on a global scale, be it a single person standing up for what is right, or a community banding together to demand justice after impunity.

Annie Goldson and Rob Hamill?s documentary Brother Number One recounts the true story of the Kiwi filmmaker?s quest for justice following the torture and death of his eldest brother, Kerry Hamill, and two sailing mates at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.? The film follows Hamill?s journey to Cambodia where he attends a War Crimes Tribunal and confronts his brother?s killer: Comrade Duch, former commander of the notorious S-21 prison. The film takes its name from Pol Pot, the leader of the ultra-Maoist Khmer Rouge, who nicknamed himself Brother Number One, and was responsible for a campaign of genocide in Cambodia that killed nearly 2 million people.

And there are many more: Bitter Seeds by Micha X. Peled follows a young journalist as she investigates a suicide epidemic among Indian cotton farmers who are deeply in debt after buying into a genetically modified seed program. Fernand Melgar?s Special Flight focuses on a community of asylum seekers and undocumented migrants at Frambois detention center in Switzerland.

The United States has its fair share of submissions as well. Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare by Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke examines the United State?s failing healthcare system, and Bidder 70, by Beth and George Gage, recounts the fallout from an act of sabotage by Tim DeChristopher that derailed an auction of oil and gas leases on public land in?Utah by the Bureau of Land Management, and landed DeChristopher in federal prison.

Each film, by turns provacative, revelatory, disturbing or cathartic, invites reflection and consideration from the audience. Which brings me back to the ubiquitous Ai Weiwei, who has once again collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron (the threesome created? Beijing's Bird's Nest for the 2008 summer Olympics) to construct this year's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (open until October 14) in London's Kensington Gardens.

This year the pavillion draws visitors under a floating platform beneath the Serpentine lawn into a multi-tiered cork landscape that invites visitors to explore the what lies beneath the surface today, and to reflect on the past and its ghosts.

The Human Rights Watch Film Fesitval co-presented with the Film Society of Lincoln Center takes place between June 14-28 at the Walter Reade Theater. For tickets and a complete program of screenings, visit the website.

DoubleDutch Debuts Pride, A Mobile-Only Yammer Competitor

pride-home-screenFollowing its $2 million Series A this spring, enterprise-focused mobile startup?DoubleDutch?is today introducing a new app called Pride whose debut?coincidentally arrives alongside?reports that Microsoft is after?a startup that could be Pride's competition: Yammer.??Like Yammer, Pride is also focused on workgroup collaboration, but, like most of what DoubleDutch does, it's not just mobile-first, it's mobile-only. Lawrence Coburn, founder and CEO at DoubleDutch, says the timing of Pride's launch is "kind of unbelievable, actually," given the reported Microsoft/Yammer deal.

Microsoft announces Surface tablet

Featured

1 day

From the mouse to Xbox, ?the best experience has been when software, hardware and peripherals work together, said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer when he took the stage Monday in Hollywood, Calif. for a mystery announcement.?He quickly introduced the Surface tablet. Not Xbox Surface, just Microsoft Surface. It is not a giant table, but rather a tablet meant, in many ways, to compete with the iPad.

But the Surface won't just be on the Nvidia ARM processor, like the iPad.?There will also be a Surface that runs on Intel-based processors, to run a full-blown version of Windows 8 Pro.

The ARM-based Surface tabs will come in 32GB and 64GB configs, and will ship around the time of Windows availability. They will be priced to compete with other ARM tablets (presumably, in line with iPads.)?The Intel-powered Windows 8 Pro Surface tablets will come 3 months later, in 64GB and 128GB configs,?priced to compete with ultrabooks.

The Surface has a 10.6-inch screen, thickness of 9.3mm,?"just wide enough for a full-size USB," says Windows chief Steven Sinofsky, who joined Ballmer to show off the goods.

The tablet is tough,?with?a Gorilla Glass 2.0 screen. Like iPads, it has a magnetically connected case, but this "Touch Cover" actually has?a full multi-touch?keyboard, too. It's 1.8 lbs., and has a kickstand that pulls out when you want to watch a movie. It also has dual-antenna Wi-Fi.

There's also a pen interface.?The Intel version of the Surface has DisplayPort, so that it can power a higher-rez?monitor. It has a native resolution of 1080p. (Note: It is not clear at this time what the screen resolution of the ARM version is.)

The Touch Cover may be quite?a cool tool: It's like a rubber keypad, and it knows when you're not using it because of a built-in accelerometer, and it shuts off and doesn't drain the battery. The technology behind the covers is pretty snazzy -- it tracks your finger movements, using logic to determine if you're typing or just resting your hands.?

There are actually a second cover, as well. The Type Cover has a?slightly raised keyboard for more traditional clickety clack.

Here's a shot of the insides of the thing:

And?here's a spec sheet with further details, and the promo page with more beauty shots.

From earlier:

I've traveled all the way to Milk Studios in?Hollywood, Calif. for a mystery announcement made by Microsoft. Will it be a tablet? Will it be an Xbox? Will it be an Xbox tablet? Only Steve Ballmer knows ... at least for the next few minutes.

Place your bets, follow me for live updates on Twitter at @wjrothman, and we'll keep updating and discussing as the news rolls in.

NASA and FAA work out spaceship rules

SNC via NASA

Sierra Nevada Corp.'s Dream Chaser space plane prototype is lifted into the air by a helicopter for a captive-carry flight test in May. The Dream Chaser is one of several proposed spacecraft that could be cleared for liftoff by the FAA and NASA in the coming years.

By Alan Boyle

NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration have worked out their division of labor for clearing a new generation of private-sector spaceships for liftoff ??putting the aviation agency in charge of any crew-carrying spacecraft that launches and lands, but requiring the space agency's additional signoff on any missions it's paying for.

The arrangement was set out under the terms of a memo signed this month. It's in line with Congress' mandate that the FAA regulate spacecraft to protect public safety, while letting spaceship companies fly private passengers at their own risk.

"As it stands today, our regulatory authority is associated with the launch and re-entry itself," acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta explained today during a media teleconference. "We don't have any charter or authority to do anything beyond that, at least until 2015."

That's when the "fly at your own risk" mandate runs out, and it's also just about the earliest time that any of the companies developing crew-carrying spaceships will be ready to fly passengers.

NASA has been paying four companies ? Blue Origin, the Boeing Co., Sierra Nevada Corp. and SpaceX???more than $400 million to develop spaceships for flying U.S. astronauts. Today, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said NASA expected to announce which companies will be involved in the next phase of the commercial crew program by mid-July. Under the terms of a compromise worked out with congressional leaders, the program will give its full support to two spaceship teams, and roughly half that level of support to a third team.

The companies involved in the program have generally said they'd be ready to fly their craft as early as 2015, assuming that they receive adequate support from NASA. Bolden, however, is focusing on 2017 for the resumption of U.S.-based crew launches to the International Space Station.

The White House requested $830 million to support the program in the next fiscal year, but during its budget deliberations, Congress has been setting aside no more than $525 million.?"We will ask for a significant increase in 2014 and the other years if we are to hold to the 2017 first-flight date for commercial crew to the International Space Station," Bolden told reporters.

The FAA-NASA arrangement for?crew-carrying vehicles builds upon the existing arrangement for cargo vehicles, exemplified by last month's successful test of SpaceX's unmanned Dragon capsule. In that case, SpaceX received a license from the FAA for launch and re-entry, and clearance from NASA and its space station partners for operations at the orbital outpost.

Going forward, the FAA will have to license all U.S. spacecraft that carry passengers, orbital as well as suborbital. As part of the regulatory process, the FAA would focus on such issues as the placement of the launch site, airspace clearance, the availability of the appropriate safety equipment, emergency plans and indemnification, Huerta said. For non-NASA flights, would-be passengers would merely have to sign an informed-consent form acknowledging that they knew the risks of spaceflight. But if NASA is involved, the space agency would be responsible for crew safety and mission assurance.

"Anytime we're paying for the service from a provider, NASA standards will apply," Bolden explained. "You have to understand, if this works out the way that we envision, humans will be going to space strictly for commercial purposes, whether it's tourism, or going to an orbiting laboratory. ... Every flight from here on out, because it involves humans, may not be a NASA flight."

Theoretically, NASA would not have any formal say over the flight of a Boeing CST-100 space capsule that's launched on an Atlas 5, heading for a Bigelow Aerospace orbital module. But because NASA is expected to be the biggest customer by far for orbital spaceflight services, the space agency would probably play a key role in the development of any private-sector orbital spacecraft developed in the U.S., even if that craft ended up occasionally going someplace other than the International Space Station. Pragmatically speaking, it's likely that NASA would be to spaceflight standards what California is to auto emission standards, or Texas is to school textbook standards.

In any case, the formal lines of regulatory authority are now set for the coming age of commercial spaceflight.?

"This important agreement between the FAA and NASA will advance our shared goals in commercial space travel," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in an FAA-NASA news release. "Working together, we will assure clear, consistent standards for the industry."?

G-20 leaders call for Europe to fix finance woes

LOS CABOS, Mexico (AP) ? European leaders at the G-20 summit struggled to reassure the world Monday that they were on the path to solving their continent's relentless economic crisis, defending the pace of their response even as market pressures pushed Spain closer to needing a bailout that would strain the world's ability to pay.

Less than 24 hours after an election that eased fears of a Greek exit from the shared euro currency, the interest rate that Spain pays on its debt surged above the 7-percent level that had forced Greece, Portugal and Ireland to seek international help.

The prospect of a bailout for Spain's ?1.1 trillion ($1.39 trillion) economy immediately eclipsed the good feeling at the G-20 from the election, and it dwarfed the host country Mexico's expressions of confidence that the meeting of the world's largest economies would lead to more than $430 billion in concrete commitment for the International Monetary Fund as insurance against future bailouts.

The Spanish delegation to the G-20 bemoaned the rise in the country's borrowing costs and said the market reaction didn't correspond to the reality of Spain's economic strength.

"We in the government are convinced that the current situation of punishment in the markets, what we're suffering from today, doesn't correspond with the efforts, or the potential, of the Spanish economy," Spain's economy minister Luis de Guindos said. "This is something that will have to be recognized in the coming days and weeks."

The day was filled with statements from a variety of world leaders calling for cooperation and for Europe to solve its crisis at a summit that is expected to produce few concrete results.

"Now is the time as we've discussed to make sure all of us join to do what's necessary to stabilize the world financial system, to avoid protectionism, to both grow the economy and create jobs while taking a responsible approach," U.S President Barack Obama said after meeting with the host, Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy urged markets to focus on a European summit at the end of the month that they said would help the continent move closer to deeper economic and political integration to match its single currency. The lack of common rules for the countries sharing the euro currency is seen as the primary cause of the current crisis. The EU summit would bring progress on common banking rules for member nations, Barroso and Van Rompuy said, although they cautioned, in sometimes defensive tones, against expectations of short-term results.

"I can assure you that even if we in June will not take definitive decisions, the path, the trajectory is very clear for everybody," Van Rompuy said. "In this case, the pace is less important than the decision we make."

Barroso took a more aggressive tone, declaring that "the crisis originated in North America" with the collapse of real-estate-linked financial products and taking a subtle dig at China and other non-democratic countries at the summit.

"Not all the members of the G-20 are democracies, but we are democracies, and we take decisions democratically. Sometimes this means taking more time," he said. "Frankly we are not coming here to receive lessons in terms of democracy or in terms of how to handle the economy, because the European Union has a model that we may be very proud of."

British Prime Minister David Cameron urged European countries to stay the austerity course to build investor confidence. He also warned against responding to economic turmoil by imposing protectionist measures.

Specifically, the Conservative government leader said a free trade deal between the United States and the European Union "could provide an enormous boost across the world."

"I think there is a threat of a failure to follow through with a long-term reform, particularly the banking reforms and the financial services reforms that were pioneered by the G-20," Cameron said, "which if we don't follow through could lead us to a repeat of the 2008 crisis all over again."

Obama met Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss differences between the two countries on Syria and Iran. Obama was also scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country plays a key role in brokering a solution to Europe's debt crisis.

On Sunday, Greece's second national election in six weeks left no party with enough votes to form a government on its own. But the conservative New Democracy party that won Sunday's ballot and the socialist PASOK, which came third, have said they will stick to Greece's international bailout commitments. But they want to renegotiate some of the harsh austerity terms taken in return for the international rescue loans.

Merkel indicated that finding room for negotiation might not be so easy, insisting at the summit that Greece had to hold its side of the bargain and that "we have to count on Greece sticking to its commitments."

Calderon tried to give a more optimistic message over the weekend, saying that he expects the G-20 to produce record donations to the International Monetary Fund, exceeding member states' pledges of $430 billion this year and bolstering its ability to conduct more bailouts in Europe.

Calderon said the U.S. would decline to contribute, a decision in line with Washington's position that more IMF money would be a de-facto U.S. bailout of Europe. It was unclear how much money would come from emerging economies such as Brazil and India, which have been pushing for more say in the governance of the IMF in exchange for greater contribution.

The idea of developing countries such as Brazil being asked to contribute more to the IMF to save European economies marked an ironic turn-around for Latin America, which had long depended on IMF funding fixes and endured prescriptions for reform, said Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the business group the Council of the Americas.

Developing countries, which have largely avoided economic meltdown, could take advantage of the crisis to finally win more decision-making power in the IMF and other organizations after spending years asking for a greater say, Farnsworth said.

Complicating that scenario, however, is economic softening in Brazil, China and other developing countries, which are struggling with slowing growth amid global uncertainty.

"Europe is a global problem, and countries that agree to global governance should be expected to participate in a way that contributes to the collective good," Farnsworth said.

decorative concrete Abbotsford, bc More Details about decorative concrete Abbotsford, bc here.

At times even those best at their work can come with a challenge hard to tackle. Many might have the opinion that years of experience can shell them out of troubled waters. It is true to an extent that experience can give them an edge but it definitely requires a lot on the part of even good concrete contractor in Abbotsford, bc to come up with solutions related to dealing with decorative concrete to prove that they are the best.

Decorative concrete has got a mind of its own. It is not the simple grey concrete that we are so used to see. It is something more. Apart from the utilitarian value, decorative concrete also has an aesthetic appeal apart from being acting as an integral part of the building such as walls, driveways, patios or floors. Laying down concrete is never an easy affair and it becomes all the more difficult with decorative concrete. The transformation takes place through the use of various materials that is used during the pouring process or once the concrete is cured. The aesthetic side of decorative concrete has made it most famous in recent times. Homeowners want to spice up the look and feel of the otherwise dull looking concrete with some innovative designs and striking colors. In the jargon of those in the constructing industry, decorative concrete equals to value engineering. It is an investment that gets you long term benefits. No wonder that any good concrete contractor in Abbotsford, bc is being flooded with projects involving decorative concrete. Contractors believe that working with decorative concrete is really challenging. Apart from the minute details the aesthetic side is to be kept in mind too. The rightful juxtaposition of mixtures and other elements is crucial in churning the right pattern and design. However, there are certain advantages of this type of concrete too and that is what concrete contractors in Abbotsford believe is eases out the otherwise tough to face challenge.

For example, decorative concrete promises low maintenance and a longer service life. It also provides good light reflectivity, is resistant to moisture and can endure a heavy foot fall if used in public places. Moreover, it reduces cost by eliminating the use of any kind of traditional floor coverings. Modern day concrete contractors in Abbotsford, bc also believes that this building element is eco friendly in nature as concrete primarily is made from recycled materials and hence it contributes to sustainable building. In public places where the use of traditional floor coverings uses adhesives that emit VOCs in the atmosphere over time, the indoor air quality gets poor eventually. With the use of decorative content, this can easily be avoided. The use of light colored decorative concrete also reduces the urban heat island effect due to improvements in solar reflectivity values.

However, the advantages of decorative concrete are not enough to justify the use of it. Before deciding to work with it, as the client, you must also put some questions before the concrete contractor in Abbotsford, bc that you have chosen to work with. It will certainly help your money not going down the drains. For example, you can enquire about the cost of the decorative concrete, what kind of maintenance will be required for the longevity, does the concrete come with a warranty and so on. You can also have a look at the earlier projects that your contractor has delivered or can also talk with the other customers for whom they have worked.

Natural antioxidant can protect against cardiovascular disease

ScienceDaily (June 16, 2012) ? University of Minnesota Medical School researchers have collaborated with the School of Public Health and discovered an enzyme that, when found at high levels and alongside low levels of HDL (good cholesterol), can dramatically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The enzyme -- glutathione peroxidase, or GPx3 -- is a natural antioxidant that helps protect organisms from oxidant injury and helps the body naturally repair itself. Researchers have found that patients with high levels of good cholesterol, the GPx3 enzyme does not make a significant difference. However, those patients with low levels of good cholesterol, the GPx3 enzyme could potentially be a big benefit. The enzyme's link to cardiovascular disease may also help determine cardiovascular risk in patients with low levels of good cholesterol and low levels of the protective GPx3.

The new research, published June 16 by PLoS One, supports the view that natural antioxidants may offer the human body profound benefits.

"In our study, we found that people with high levels of the GPx3 enzyme and low levels of good cholesterol were six times less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than people with low levels of both," said lead author Jordan L. Holtzman, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and medicine within the University of Minnesota Medical School. "This GPx3 enzyme gives us a good reason to believe that natural antioxidants like GPx3 are good for heart health."

The combination of low HDL and low GPx3 affects an estimated 50 million people -- one in four adults -- in the U.S. This condition can lead to fatal heart attacks and strokes. Researchers continue to look for new ways to better predict who is at risk for these diseases and how patients can limit the impact of the disease once it's diagnosed.

"It's important to point out that people should not rush out to their doctors and demand testing for the GPx3 enzyme," said Holtzman. "But in time, we hope that measuring this enzyme will be a common blood test when determining whether a patient is at risk for cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes."

To arrive at his results, Holtzman and his colleagues studied the three major risk factors for cardiovascular disease: hypertension, smoking and high cholesterol. Data suggests that those with low levels of HDL and GPx3 were six times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, including heart attack or stroke, than those with low levels of HDL and high levels of GPx3.

The study examined 130 stored samples from the Minnesota Heart Survey from participants who died of cardiovascular disease after 5-12 years of follow-up care. The ages of patients studied ranged from 26-85 years old. Their data was compared to 240 control samples.

"This is an important enzyme for people with low HDL cholesterol," said Holtzman. "We think further research will be important in determining the future role of GPx3 and what drugs may serve to increase its activity in the blood."

The research reported in this publication was supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD (RO1-HL23727), the Mayo Chair Endowment, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota (DJ), and grant no. 2005R013 from the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Den Haag, the Netherlands (BB).
