Family of Joe Paterno releases statement on NCAA sanctions

Joe Paterno's family released a statement Monday following the NCAA sanctions against Penn State and its football program. (Charles LeClaire-USPRESSWIRE)

It didn?t take long for the family of former Penn State coach Joe Paterno to release a statement in regards to the NCAA sanctions against the school and its football program Monday.

Part of the penalties included the school vacating wins from 1998-2011 which removed JoePa as the winningest head football coach in Division I history.

Here is the statement:

?Sexual abuse is reprehensible, especially when it involves children, and no one starting with Joe Paterno condones or minimizes it. The horrific acts committed by Jerry Sandusky shock the conscience of every decent human being. How Sandusky was able to get away with his crimes for so long has yet to be fully understood, despite the claims and assertions of the Freeh Report.

?The release of the Free report has triggered an avalanche of vitriol, condemnation and posthumous punishment on Joe Paterno. The NCAA has now become the latest party to accept the report as the final word on the Sandusky scandal. The sanctions announced by the NCAA today defame the legacy and contributions of a great coach and educator without any input from our family or those who knew him best.

?That the President, the Athletic Director and the Board of Trustees accepted this unprecedented action by the NCAA without requiring a full due process hearing before the Committee on Infractions is an abdication of their responsibilities and a breach of their fiduciary duties to the University and the 500,000 alumni. Punishing past, present and future students of the University because of Sandusky?s crimes does not serve justice. This is not a fair or thoughtful action; it is a panicked response to the public?s understandable revulsion at what Sandusky did.

?The point of due process is to protect against this sort of reflexive action. Joe Paterno was never interviewed by the University or the Freeh Group. His counsel has not been able to interview key witnesses as they are represented by counsel related to ongoing litigation. We have had no access to the records reviewed by the Free group. The NCAA never contacted our family or our legal counsel. And the fact that several parties have pending trials that could produce evidence and testimony relevant to this matter has been totally discounted.

?Unfortunately all of these facts have been ignored by the NCAA, the Free Group and the University.?

Beijing to set up military garrison to guard disputed islands in South China Sea

Macau News.Net Monday 23rd July, 2012

The Chinese defence ministry has said it will set up a military garrison on a bunch of islands in the South China Sea.his decision is expected to fuel more tensions with China's neighbouring countries.

The army will operate from Sansha in the Paracel Islands, one of two archipelagos in the South China Sea, that are claimed by both China and Vietnam.

The garrison, which has been approved by the Central Military Commission, will be responsible for the Sansha area national defence mobilisation and reserve forces activities', the defence ministry said on its website.

The ministry did not mention when the garrison would be established, but the move to station troops on the Paracels is likely to provoke Hanoi.

Beijing's move last month to assign Sansha as its administrative centre for the Paracels and the Spratly Islands prompted a rare demonstration on Sunday in the Vietnamese capital against China's territorial assertions.

China and South Vietnam once administered different parts of the Paracels but after a brief conflict in 1974 Beijing took control of the entire group of islands. Vietnam holds several of the larger Spratly Islands, The Telegraph reports.

In June, the state-backed China National Offshore Oil Corporation announced it was welcoming bids to explore oil blocks in the disputed waters, a week after Vietnam adopted a law placing the Spratlys under its sovereignty.

A July 13 meeting of the Association of Southeast Nations broke up without a joint statement for the first time in 45 years because members could not agree on how to refer to China's behaviour in the disputed waters.

The countries are drafting a 'code of conduct' to try to end the rift. (ANI)

Does the CIA really have no idea about the nature of Syria's rebels?

It's hard to believe, but so say anonymous officials in a Washinton Post article published yesterday.

Syria's war has raged for well over a year in a region of intense US interest. The country shares borders with Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and NATO ally Turkey. President Bashar al-Assad's regime?has a chemical weapons stockpile. The country is a close ally of Iran. And the US has long urged Syrians, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, to upend their country's political order and build a new order while successively piling sanctions on the central government.

But according to a Washington Post article yesterday, which relies entirely on the anonymous sourcing so prevalent in coverage of Washington, the Central Intelligence Agency and other US intelligence agencies have no idea about the composition of the forces fighting Mr. Assad and their ultimate political goals. The Obama administration has been supporting rebels with communications equipment and other non-lethal support for months, and appears eager to do more. But the Post writes that, according to "officials," Team Obama has been stymied by a lack of information.

The Post article quotes a US "official who expressed concerns over persistent gaps" in the government's knowledge. ?We?ve got to figure out who is over there first, and we don?t really know that,? the source told the Post. ?It?s not like this is a new war. It?s been going on for 16 months.?

The story made a splash this morning on the Twitter feeds and blogs of people who follow the Middle East, with many sniggering about the incompetence implied: How could the US intelligence services and their allies know so little about who is fighting in Syria? After all, there's an overt intelligence budget of $70 billion and however many more billions for covert intelligence gathering, and Syria is right at the top of the government's foreign police concerns.

I think something else is at work here. It's axiomatic that the agendas of people who talk to reporters (advancing their interests) are not generally aligned with those of the reporters themselves (getting as close to the truth as possible). When sources are anonymous, the likelihood of manipulation tends to go up. I think that the US intelligence community and the politicians they advice know plenty about the insurgency in Syria, but are uncomfortable with the implications of what they're finding.

This is not to say that Syria's uprising is easy to understand, marked as it is by regional and sectarian interests, little to no central command and, yes, a paucity of clear information flows. It is undoubtedly the case that there's a great deal that the US would like to know about the rebellion that remains out of reach.

But that is a far different thing from driving blind. In the same Post article an unnamed "Middle Eastern intelligence official" implied that a great deal is understood, though he complained that vetting the rebel groups is "still in the very early stages." The Post writes: "The foreign official cited concern that the opposition is at risk of becoming dominated by Islamists pushing for a Muslim Brotherhood government after Assad. 'We think this is a majority view, at least among those who are fighting in the streets,' the official said."

That seems highly likely. Assad is an Alawite, a secretive minority sect that split from mainstream Shiism about 1,000 years ago. Assad's regime is dominated by Alawis, who are estimated to make up about 10 percent of the country while the country's majority faith is Sunni Islam, a community that has long felt like second-class citizens in their own land and his turned to Islamist movements in the past to fight the central government. Assad's father and predecessor, Hafez al-Assad, crushed an uprising against him led by the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood in 1982 when he sacked the city of Hama, killing at least 10,000 of its residents.

What I'll call, for lack of a better phrase, mainstream Sunni Islamism has long been a dominant strain of opposition politics and resistance in Syria and remains so today. Rebel commanders use religious language and banners in their propaganda videos, many of them grouped within the Free Syrian Army (FSA), a patchwork of rebel factions. There are, of course, many supporters of the uprising who favor a more secular form of government. But if the US is actually waiting for a day of clarity over what ideology or person will come to control the insurgency, that day will never come. It's a blend of forces and agendas at play on the rebel side.

Jihadis

There are also Islamist militants of a darker color, from a US perspective, at work in Syria. Jihadis more in the style of Al Qaeda are also operating inside the country. Veterans of the war against the US in Iraq have been involved in attacks on government forces, bringing with them the skills honed in building powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) around Iraqi cities like Fallujah to target Assad. There have also been persistent, though difficult to confirm, reports of rebels executing government forces that surrender to them, with Alawi soldiers far more likely to be killed than fellow Sunnis.?

These fighters often stand apart from the FSA. Time's Rania Abouzeid reported from the town of Saraqeb, along the highway from Aleppo to Damascus, earlier this month that the Ahrar al-Shams Brigade was fighting alongside FSA members there. The Shams Brigade is composed of Salafis ? members of the austere form of Islam embraced by Saudi Arabia and Al Qaeda who are particularly hostile to US interests. Suicide bombing has been at least an occasional tactic. Last week Assad's deputy defense minister and brother-in-law Assef Shawkat was among those killed in an attack on a strategy meeting at a Damascus military building that the government said was carried out by a suicide bomber. Also killed were Defense Minister Daoud Rajha and former defense minister Hassan Turkmani, with the interior minister surviving.

The FSA said the bomb was planted in the meeting room and suicide was not involved. But this was far from the first claim of suicide bombings. In April, alleged suicide bombings in Idlib killed eight people. And a group calling itself Jabhat al-Nusra took responsibility for at least three suicide attacks in Damascus earlier this year. FSA spokesmen have insisted that any suicide bombings against the government have been carried out by the regime itself in an effort to paint the opposition as dangerously radical.

Perhaps. But it's hard to imagine that hard-core jihadists like the ones who flooded into Iraq after the US invasion in 2003 aren't at work in Syria. Just as they poured across the Syrian (and other borders) into Iraq, foreign fighters have been entering Syria to fight Assad and the hated Alawites, joining up with like-minded Syrians. How many of them are there and how important are they to the fight against Assad? That's probably one of the data points US officials are struggling with.

Easy Ways On How To Efficiently Improve Your ... - Energy Efficiency

It is always a good thing to have the information you need when you are doing any home improvements. You will be given helpful information in the article below that you should use when working on your home.

When you start your improvement jobs, don?t be quick to demolish. You have to be able to see what you are tearing down before you remove something. It can be really expensive if you damage electrical or plumbing systems by mistake.

Fun is essential to home improvement. Although it is important to be serious and careful with your work, you should still have a good time as you complete your project. If you don?t enjoy what you?re doing, you will likely make mistakes. If you do not enjoy this kind of work, it is often best to hire someone else to do the job.

Take advantage of special classes at your local home improvement store to get started on any do it your self project that you are considering. Many stores offer how-to classes on many home improvement projects including painting techniques and installing tile. Attend some of these helpful classes to pick up the basic skills you need to tackle your next project around the house.

When redecorating your bathroom, do it with ease and without spending too much. Buying new towels, a shower curtain and bath mat is a very easy way to give your bathroom a new look. It is like giving your bathroom a face lift! A good way to get a new look in your bathroom area is to put in some plants; think about some that will do well in that environment.

Keep trees and shrubs from being too close to your home. Spreading roots can cause havoc to a home?s foundation, so it?s best to keep plants and trees at a safe distance. If the trees are small enough, they can be moved with a root ball attachment.

Look at the world around you to gain inspiration for your next home improvement project. Make use of magazines and books that are focused on decorating the home. Be sure to bring home samples of different colors to help yourself develop a color scheme that you will be happy with. Think about the look you truly want, so that you?ll be properly prepared for making home repairs.

Try this idea if you are plagued by hard water. Filter the water in your home with a water softener. Water softening agents work to remove magnesium, calcium and other minerals from water, items that are creating the hardness. Various kinds of water softeners are available on the market, including those that utilize tablets. Then you can decide on one that works for your home.

When you are looking for a home improvement contractor, ensure that they have insurance. If they damage your house, and they are not insured, you might have to take them to small claims court. You can ask for papers to make sure that the contractor is insured.

Use old shoe boxes for an aesthetic touch that adds storage space. Use any wallpaper you have left, or any fabric, to cover the boxes with. It can really add a sense of playful drama to your room, and it is a cheap and effective storage solution!

?Hurricane socks? are a wise investment for those who live in areas susceptible to hurricanes or floods. The specially designed piece of fabric has the ability to absorb up to a gallon of water. Place them strategically around doors and near wind-facing windows.

Dollar for dollar, an additional bathroom can really boost the value of your home. It is easy to understand that an additional bathroom is handy, particularly when each bathroom is on a different floor of the home. When you have a large family or a houseful of guests, you can never have too many bathrooms!

Whether you or someone else is working on your home, it?s helpful to know about the project at hand. This is how you can be sure you are doing the right things. Follow the advice given to you in this article to successfully make repairs on your home.

Summer sets the stage for many of our favorite rituals, usually of the mating variety. The one event that really lets you know you?re smack in the middle of the most wonderful time of year is without a doubt the BBQ. Food and drink aside, barbecues are among the most exclusive yet least pretentious of social gatherings. No need for VIP tables: if you were invited (to the right one, that is), you?re already VIP. Here at MIMS, we want to make your next BBQ experience a little easier by giving you something you can throw on and forget about, allowing you to host without having to buckle down and work a double-shift as resident chef and DJ.

Fresh from a cross-country road trip that took him around most of the North American sub-continent, original French Connection DJ Sagewondah connected with Smokey Robotic?s Konrad OldMoney and put together 60 minutes of Fonk for your backyard soir?es. A mix of ignorant rap records with imaginative re-workings of R&B burners into World 2.0 madness and just a hint of island flavy. Have your plastic cups and styrofoam plates ready, dinner is served.

Colorado Tragedy Prompts 2012 Campaigns To Scuttle Plans

WASHINGTON -- The deadly shootings at a movie theater in Colorado have briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."

Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shootings in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.

The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.

Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shootings occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shootings served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."

"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."

"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.

Other prominent lawmakers called the shootings a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.

"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.

Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shootings could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.

As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.

Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."

Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.

But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.

"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.

"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

Hands-Off Relationship

Dear Prudence,
My husband is kind, supportive, funny, generous, smart, and loving. However, I feel like I must divorce him. Six years ago, when we were in our early 20s and had just fallen in love, after a night of partying and drinking, he woke me up in the middle of the night and started to have sex with me. I was dozing and still drunk and, yes, I took my panties off myself. But when I realized that it was not OK for him to make advances on me in my state, I pushed him away and ran out. He later felt so bad he wanted turn himself in for rape. I was very confused and thought at times that I was overreacting and at others that I was raped. We painfully worked through this, but the incident made my husband very reluctant about having sex. This led to an agreement that he shouldn't be afraid of coming close to me in similar situations as long as he asked my consent. This made us feel better and I felt secure again. However, we just found ourselves in a very similar situation. After coming back from a friend?s wine tasting we went to bed and he started to kiss me. I liked it and went along, only to wake up in the morning and remember only half of it. Now I am in the same painful spot I was before and I can?t fathom how he could have ignored our agreement. Should I just drop it or am I right about feeling abused?

(AP) ? Jeremy Lin loves New York. He wanted to stay.

Even so, it was more important to him to be on the court as a starting point guard, and he's convinced the Houston Rockets will put him there.

"They made a very compelling pitch in terms of what I could bring to the team and for the city," Lin said in a statement released through the team Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the Knicks decided not to match Houston's bold three-year, $25 million offer sheet. "I am also impressed with (Houston owner Leslie) Alexander and the management's commitment to improving the team."

The Rockets put out the statement not long after SI.com reported that Lin had acknowledged in an interview, "Honestly, I preferred New York. But my main goal in free agency was to go to a team that had plans for me and wanted me. I wanted to have fun playing basketball."

Fun is what the 23-year-old undrafted guard was all about last season.

Coming out of nowhere ? well, Harvard, by way of Golden State and then Houston ? Lin got to New York when the Knicks claimed him off waivers in December. He was briefly demoted to the developmental league, recalled, and got his chance to play when coach Mike D'Antoni put him in with the Knicks floundering at 8-15.

He scored 25 points in a 99-92 win over New Jersey Nets and "Linsanity" was born. Soon New York was in playoff contention and Lin was having drinks named after him.

Lin said Wednesday that he "loved this past year with the Knicks and truly appreciate the opportunity that New York gave me," even though the team decided to let him go.

"The way the fans fully embraced me and our team was something I'll always cherish forever," he said. "It was an extraordinary and unforgettable time that was easily the best year of my life."

And now it's on to Houston, which made its move and got its man.

Why did the Rockets go for him? Because it made basketball sense and marketing sense.

The Rockets not only filled a position of need, but also snagged a player who may re-establish the franchise in Asia, where the team enjoyed massive popularity during Yao Ming's career.

Lin is American-born, but of Chinese and Taiwanese descent, and his timing is perfect to capitalize on the NBA's explosive growth in China. He'll wear No. 7 for the Rockets, a change from the No. 17 he wore with the Knicks. The team began taking pre-orders for Lin jerseys online on Wednesday.

Yao was widely credited with breaking open the Chinese market for the NBA, but his retirement last summer hasn't slowed the game's growth or popularity.

Television ratings for live NBA games on CCTV5, the national network in China, were up 21 percent in 2011-12 from the previous season, the league said. The NBA had about 16 million followers on social media when Yao retired, and that number spiked to 49 million last season, the league said.

Marc Ganis, president of Chicago-based SportsCorp, says the Rockets will be able to build on Lin's marketability.

"There is still a lot of interest in the Rockets in China, even without Yao," Ganis said. "This is clearly an effort to get a good player, but also capitalize on the in-roads that the team has already made with Chinese sponsors and the fans there."

Reaction among fans closer to home was muted, although Lin was the talk of sports radio in Houston all day and exploded on social media. Since the acquisition became official late Tuesday night, the Rockets' Twitter page has picked up 3,000 new followers and the Facebook page added 10,000 "likes."

However, late Wednesday afternoon, the marquee at the Toyota Center mentioned only season-ticket packages for the Rockets, along with an Aerosmith concert and a WWE Smackdown.

Forward Patrick Patterson is eager to work with Lin, and feels like he's an ideal fit for coach Kevin McHale's system.

"With the type of athletes that we have, we like to run up and down the court in transition, we like to do pick and rolls," Patterson said before the Rockets' summer league game Wednesday night in Las Vegas. "And that's what he thrives well in: pick and rolls, getting to the basket, getting lay-ups, creating opportunities for each player on the team on the floor."

Rockets assistant coach Kelvin Sampson said in Las Vegas that the team hopes Lin brings stability to the point-guard position for many seasons in Houston.

"We expect Jeremy to come in and be our point guard," Sampson said. "We're not looking for anything other than that. He's a high-character kid, plays hard, really good off pick and rolls. I think he's good in transition. We're going with a really young team next year and Jeremy, with his work ethic and his leadership; I think he's going to be what we really need."

Before the season arrives, general manager Daryl Morey still has work to do.

The next major priority for Houston is finding a big man. Dwight Howard is still available, but that may be long shot. The Rockets expect to sign Bulls center Omer Asik to a three-year, $25 million offer sheet that's similar to Lin's deal.

Beyond that, Morey must replenish a roster that's been gutted over the past two weeks. The Rockets traded Chase Budinger and Samuel Dalembert as they collected draft picks for a package aimed at enticing Orlando to send them Howard, a six-time All-Star.

Houston ended up keeping all three first-round draft picks, selecting Connecticut guard Jeremy Lamb, Iowa State forward Royce White and Kentucky forward Terrence Jones, who all remain unsigned.

The Rockets lost unrestricted free agent Goran Dragic to Phoenix, began their pursuit of Lin and traded Kyle Lowry to Toronto. They withdrew their qualifying offer to guard Courtney Lee, completed a sign-and-trade that sent center Marcus Camby to New York and used the amnesty clause to waive forward Luis Scola.

On Wednesday, the Rockets waived forward Jon Leuer and center Jerome Jordan. Leuer came to Houston in the Dalembert trade with Milwaukee, and Jordan was acquired in the Camby deal.

Houston has only won one playoff series since 1997 and missed the postseason entirely the last three seasons. Whether Lin becomes a key piece to a championship-contending team is anyone's guess ? he's only started 25 games in his young career.

But just adding Lin has made the Rockets more intriguing than they've been in a while. It's up to Morey to turn them into a contender again.

Parental Abuse Increases Child's Risk of Cancer in Adulthood ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on July 18, 2012

Parental Abuse Increases Childs Risk of Cancer in AdulthoodA new study suggests abuse of a child by a parent can increase the child?s chance of developing cancer in adulthood.

Purdue University researchers discovered the risks are significant when mothers abuse their daughters and fathers abuse their sons.

?People often say that children are resilient and they?ll bounce back, but we found that there are events that can have long-term consequences on adult health,? said Dr. Kenneth Ferraro, distinguished professor of sociology.

?In this case, people who were frequently emotionally or physically abused by their parents were more likely to have cancer in adulthood, and the link was greater when fathers abused sons and mothers abused daughters. Overall, the more frequent and intense the abuse, the more it elevated the cancer risk.

?We would like to see child abuse noted as an environmental factor that can increase cancer occurrence in adulthood. More research on this topic also could help mediate the effects or improve interventions to help abused children.?

The research is published online by the Journal of Aging and Health.

?We started examining a variety of childhood misfortunes, including abuse, and when these were all combined, we found that men with the most stressors during childhood were more likely to develop cancer,? said co-author and sociology and gerontology graduate student Patricia Morton.

?Second, we found that when children were abused by their same-sex parent, it increased their cancer risk,? possibly becaue of the greater social bond between same-sex children and parents.

?Other studies have shown that if a mother smokes, the daughter is more likely to smoke, and the same relationship is found when sons mirror their father?s behavior,? Morton said.

?More research is needed, but another possibility is that men may be more likely to physically abuse their sons, and mothers are more likely to physically abuse their daughters.?

Researchers reviewed survey data from 2,101 adults in two waves of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States.

Abuse was one of many childhood misfortunes ? including poverty, loss of parent and family educational status ? that researchers examined to determine if there was a link to cancer in adulthood.

One method of analysis looked at cumulative stress during childhood. This review found that men who experienced the most cumulative stressors during childhood were more likely to have cancer. This was not true with women, and this suggests that men and women may have different responses to childhood stressors, Morton said.

A second perspective looked at each category of misfortune ? a viewpoint that identified the connection between abuse and cancer. In this analysis, survey participants were not directly asked if they were abused, but abuse was defined by survey answers to questions such as how frequently a parent, sibling or other person insulted or swore at them as a child; refused to talk them; threatened to hit them; pushed, grabbed or shoved; threw something at them; kicked, bit or hit them with a fist; choked them; or burned or scalded them.

The frequency of these abuses also was identified. Researcher then controlled for factors such as an adults age, lifestyle choices and economic status yet the association between abuse and cancer remained.

?It also is likely,? Ferraro said, ?that the effect between child abuse and cancer is underrepresented in our study, because people who suffered abuse and were then incarcerated, placed in a mental institution or died were not included in this survey of adults. These groups may represent people with more acute and severe effects from abuse, and even though they are omitted, we still find a link.?

As a result of the findings, researchers are expanding their investigation of the effects of child abuse and health conditions in adulthood. Scientists are now examining potential links between child abuse and other health outcomes, including heart attacks and types of cancer.

?The connection between negative childhood events and mental health is accepted, and these findings reinforce that such events can also have a long-lasting effect on a person?s physical health,? Morton said.

?It?s shocking just how much the damage sticks, and it is a reminder that childhood, which is defined by rapidly changing biological systems, is a sensitive period of development.?

Marinduque Awaits You: Colorectal Cancer Chemotherapy Drugs

My son-in-law died last April after being diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2010. Our family were all very devastated, since he was only 51 years old. Several chemotherapeutic regimens were tried by oncologists here in Northern California,in the most prestigious oncology treatment Research Center. The drugs tried did prolong his life for almost 2 years, but at the end, not one of the several experimental drugs saved his life, since he was already in stage IV when he was diagnosed. I had a feeling that my son-in-law could have survived the disease if he was diagnosed earlier, perhaps stage II or even III for the for therapy to be effective. My son-in-law left a 9-year old daughter and a 47-year old widow, because cancer sucks and kills if not diagnosed early. Please have a yearly physical check up even if you are feeling well.

This personal experience inspired me to do some web search on the drugs approved and what is in the pipeline for the treatment of colon cancer here in the US. The article is as follows:

Seven drugs are currently approved by FDA for colorectal cancer chemotherapy:

5-fluorouracil (5-FU, Adrucil), which is often given in combination with leucovorin

(Wellcovorin). Leucovorin is a vitamin that helps boost the effectiveness of 5-FU.

Capecitabine (Xeloda)

Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin)

Irinotecan (Camptosar)

Bevacizumab (Avastin)

Cetuximab (Erbitux)

Panitumumab (Vectibix)

Capecitabine is a pill form of 5-FU. The other drugs are administered intravenously. Many of these drugs are given in combination with each other. Common chemotherapy combination regimens include: 5-FU / LV (5-FU and leucovorin), FOLFOX (5-FU with leucovorin and oxaliplatin), FOLFORI (5-FU with leucovorin and irinotecan), IFL (Irinotecan, 5-FU, leucovorin), and XELOX (Capecitabine and oxaliplatin).

Side effects occur with all chemotherapeutic drugs. They are more severe with higher doses and increase over the course of treatment. Because cancer cells grow and divide rapidly, chemotherapy drugs work by killing fast-growing cells. This means that healthy cells that multiply quickly can also be affected. The fast-growing normal cells most likely to be affected are blood cells forming in the bone marrow, and cells in the digestive tract, reproductive system, and hair follicles. Nausea and vomiting is a very common side effect, but drugs such as ondansetron (Zofran) can help provide relief. In general, side effects are nearly always temporary, and medications can help manage them. Most patients are able to continue with normal activities for all but perhaps 1 - 2 days a month.

Specific Chemotherapy Drugs

5-Fluorouracil(5-FU) with Leucovorin. Adjuvant (following surgery) chemotherapy using 5-fluorouracil, either alone or with leucovorin (5-FU/LV), is the standard treatment for patients with high-risk colon cancer (Stage III or select patients with Stage II tumors). Leucovorin, also called folinic acid, is a form of the B vitamin folic acid, which helps increase 5-FU?s effectiveness. Patients are given a series of cycles that usually continue for at least 6 months.

There are many different ways of giving 5-FU, including intravenously over several hours once a week, intravenously daily for 5 consecutive days every month, or as continuous infusion with a portable pump. The most common side effects include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, hair loss, swelling of hands and feet, rashes, and mouth sores.

Studies indicate that bevacizumab administered intravenously along with IFL extends survival by about 5 months longer than IFL alone. Common side effects of bevacizumab include nosebleeds, fatigue, diarrhea, and high blood pressure. Less common side effects include stroke, heart attacks, angina, and formation of holes in the colon and stomach (gastrointestinal perforation).

Cetuximab. Cetuximab (Erbitux) was approved in 2004 for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. This monoclonal antibody drug targets epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a protein required by cancer cells in order to proliferate. It can be used either in combination with irinotecan or alone for patients who have not responded to irinotecan. Studies of the cetuximab-irinotecan combination suggest it can help in tumor shrinkage. It has a modest effect on survival, prolonging patients' lives by about an additional month or two. Recent guidelines recommend that cetuximab, and panitumumab (see below), should be given only to patients with tumors that express the wild-type KRAS gene. Patients with metastatic cancer should have tumors tested for KRAS gene status.

Panitumumab . Panitumumab (Vectibix) was approved in 2006 for treatment of colorectal cancer that has metastasized following standard chemotherapy. Like cetuximab, panitumumab is a monoclonal antibody drug that targets EGFR. In clinical trials, panitumumab helped delay disease progression and prolong survival by about 3 months. About 8% of patients experienced tumor shrinkage. Common side effects of this drug include skin rash, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea or constipation. Serious side effects include pulmonary fibrosis, severe skin rash, and skin reactions at the infusion site.

Investigational Biologic Drugs

One of the most promising recent developments in cancer treatment research has been the emergence of so-called "targeted therapies." Traditional chemotherapy drugs can be effective, but because they do not distinguish between healthy and cancerous cells their generalized toxicity can cause severe side effects. Targeted therapies work on a molecular level by blocking specific mechanisms associated with cancer cell growth and division.

Many targeted therapies are classified as biologic drugs. Bevacizumab (Avastin), cetixumab (Erbitux), and panitumumab (Vectibix) are currently the three biologic drugs approved for colorectal cancer treatment, but other drugs are in development. Targeted therapies involve many different types of drugs and molecular pathways. These include:

Angiogenesis Inhibitors: Anti-angiogenesis drugs inhibit the formation of new blood vessels that supply tumors with the blood, oxygen, and nutrients vital to tumor growth. Angiogenesis inhibitors, such as the monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (Avastin), target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Cediranib (Recentin), formerly AZD2171, is a new angiogenesis inhibitor that is in Phase III clinical trials for treatment of colorectal cancer.

Tumor Growth Factor Inhibitors: Tumor growth factors, such as epidermal growth factor, stimulate cell growth. Cetixumab (Erbitux) and panitumumab (Vectibix) are the two currently approved colorectal cancer drugs that target the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Nimotuzumab (TheraCIM) is currently being studied in combination with irinotecan.

Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors. Tyrosine kinase is an enzyme associated with EGFR that is involved with the signaling mechanisms that prompt cell growth. The EGFR/tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib (Tarceva), which is approved for the treatment of pancreatic and lung cancers, is being investigated as an adjuvant treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer. Sunitinib (Sutent), which is approved for renal cell carcinoma, is another tyrosine kinase inhibitor in trials for colorectal cancer.

Reading Art: David | Literary & Visual Arts | Arts & Entertainment ...

By Wim Van Aalst Created: July 17, 2012 Last Updated: July 17, 2012

This is the first installment of a series of articles called ?Reading Art.? In the series, I will be exploring masterful works of art through the ages and looking for what makes them extraordinary, from what is obvious to what is hidden.?

Strength and beauty are epitomized. (Courtesy of Artrenewal.org)

Strength and beauty are epitomized. (Courtesy of Artrenewal.org)

What better place to start than with Michelangelo?s statue of David, a Western icon of unquestionable magnificence.

Carved by hand from marble, the 17-foot-high statue clearly springs from the hand of a master: Idealized forms are characterized by a grand fusion of elegance and strength. The masterpiece radiates an aura of eternity, a timeless uber-quality that perhaps only Raphael managed to incorporate to a similar degree in his paintings.?

The composition couldn?t be simpler, though: a male nude in contrapposto, the head turned sideways and his only prop, a sling, draped around his back, largely hidden from sight. Yet this simplicity did not hinder its creators from expressing both content and emotion.

Creators? Indeed so. The statue had originally been commissioned to the sculptor Agostino di Duccio years before Michelangelo was born. For reasons unknown, Agostino ceased working on the project when he was just halfway through roughly shaping the legs, feet, torso, and some draperies.?

\>");

Ten years later, Antonio Rossellino worked on David briefly, after which the block of marble remained neglected for another 25 years until the then 26-year-old Michelangelo convinced the commissioners that he was the right man to finish the job. He worked on it for over two years, sometimes at night, relying for light on a big candle strapped to his hat.

The Story of David

To reiterate the Biblical story of David, the young shepherd conquers Goliath, the giant Philistine warrior, with a rock from his sling, beheads him, and later becomes the legendary Hebrew king.?

It was habitual in the late 15th century to portray David with the head of the slain Goliath, but here a more diplomatic approach was used to express the theme?a lone David is gazing in the distance, his brow furrowed, weighing his opponent?s strengths instants prior to the fight.?

His tense expression contrasts heavily with his relaxed pose. He?s alert, yet at ease; fearless, but not cocky. His pupils are heart-shaped. All he sees is the aim of his heart, his glorious stance already predicting his victory.

The Statue?s ?Imperfections?

There are a couple of anatomic imperfections in the statue that have perplexed viewers throughout the ages. These ?flaws? are hard to explain away as simply errors?given that Michelangelo knew human anatomy to perfection.

David?s rather big head and slightly oversized torso are generally assumed to have been a deliberate choice in order to compensate for perspective foreshortening. The statue was originally intended to be positioned high up along the roofline of the Florence Cathedral.??

It?s a theory that really makes sense: Perspective by then held no mysteries to Italian artists. But it doesn?t explain the unusually large right hand.?

We could suppose that the hand?s size was intended to serve a diversionary function, but it is unlikely since the exaggerated definition of the nipples already does a sufficient job of balancing the pelvic nudity. So why this ?mistake? then??

Michelangelo realized the importance of making the shepherd boy look capable of toppling a giant?in more than one context. Alongside the purely religious motivation, the victorious-underdog theme of the story had certainly played a part in its commissioning.

At that time, Florence was an independent city-state threatened by powerful rivals. So it wouldn?t do if David were just a handsome lad, all good looks and elegance. He very much needed to look like a fellow to be reckoned with. And he does.?

Michelangelo succeeded in expressing the Biblical story with diplomacy and efficiency. This is not the statue of an underdog?it is a warning sign imbued with breathtaking glory: ?No matter how big of a bully you are, you will pay dearly if you mess with the people of God.??

From the foot of the statue, with that enormous hand menacingly resting overhead like a high-caliber weapon, any desire to spar would quickly disintegrate.

We will never be able to tell to what extent the statue?s magnificence helped secure peace or avert foreign invasions, but doubtless the sheer artistry of the piece inspired awe in foreigners and commanded their respect more than a threatening message would have ever been able to do.?

Renaissance artists knew a thing or two about putting the power of beauty to good use in their arts.?

Wim Van Aalst has a master?s degree in publicity and graphic design. A self-taught painter, he began working as a professional artist in 2008 and teaching students in traditional oil painting techniques and art theories.?
