Prince William closer to fatherhood, as wife Kate labors at London hospital

Backdropped by members of the media, a British police officer stands across the entrance of St. Mary's Hospital exclusive Lindo Wing in London, Monday, July 22, 2013. Buckingham Palace officials say Prince William's wife, Kate, has been admitted to the hospital in the early stages of labour. Royal officials said that Kate traveled by car to St. Mary's Hospital in central London. LONDON ? Prince William's wife, Kate, is in the early stages of labor in a private wing of a central London hospital, palace officials said Monday.

It is a historic moment for the British monarchy ? the couple's first child will become third in line for the British throne, after Prince Charles and William, and should eventually become king or queen.

William and Kate entered St. Mary's Hospital in central London through a side door early Monday morning, avoiding the world's media. Palace officials confirmed her arrival about 90 minutes later.

Royal officials said they traveled by car, without a police escort, just before 6 a.m. Kate ? also known as the Duchess of Cambridge ? is expected to give birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana also gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.

"Things are progressing as normal," the couple's spokesman said.

She will be looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr. Marcus Setchell. Palace officials are not expected to provide many details about how her labor is progressing.

The baby is in line to become Britain's monarch and be recognized as head of state in 15 other countries, including Canada and Australia, playing a leading role in charting the future of the Commonwealth.

But little else is known, including how the baby will arrive ? it is not clear if Kate will have a natural birth or deliver by a planned cesarean section ? its gender and its name.

Royal watchers must wait to be told of the baby's arrival from the palace, which is planning to reveal the news through a mixture of tradition and social media. Continued...

Palace officials have said that the first hint will come when a royal aide emerges from the hospital with a signed bulletin carrying the Buckingham Palace letterhead. The bulletin will be given to an official who will be driven to Buckingham Palace, where it will be posted on an easel in public view in front of the building.

At the same time the bulletin is posted, there will be an official announcement on Twitter and the media will be formally notified. The document will give the baby's gender, weight and time of birth.

It could be some time before the baby's name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles's name remained a mystery for an entire month.

But it is the baby's gender that is of particular interest because the prospect of Kate's pregnancy prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. Boy or girl, the child will be the prospective future monarch.

The birth of a new heir to the throne has been breathlessly anticipated by many Britons since William and Kate wed on April 29, 2011.

Despite a rough start to the pregnancy, when she was hospitalized for acute morning sickness, the 31-year-old Kate made a number of public appearances that were halted only near the end of her term.

Since the duchess has cut back on her royal duties, media outlets have been clamoring for position outside of the hospital in anticipation of the birth, jockeying to secure the best vantage point for filming William and Kate emerging, babe in arms.

At Buckingham Palace, where the birth will be announced, tourists packed near the front gate, peering through the black iron bars to catch of a glimpse of any action.

Two New York teachers, Maddalena Buffalino, 29, and Michael Savino, 32, were quizzing a pair of passing police officers about where the easel would be placed.

"Just being here is very cool," said Buffalino, who said she'd been following royal baby news intently. Continued...

She said the tradition and glamor of the royal household was what attracted Americans like her to the palace.

"It's the history," the social studies teacher said. "We don't have it."

Police eventually shooed the growing crush of tourists away from the gate, with one officer warning the assembled crowd to keep an eye on their wallets and valuables.

Officials have said that William plans to take two weeks' paternity leave and then return to his military duties as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot in Wales.

His tour of duty is scheduled to wrap up around September, and he and Kate are expected to move from their isolated cottage on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales to Kensington Palace in central London.

But major refurbishment works at the palace likely won't be finished until at least a month or two after the infant is born ? meaning that William and Kate will most likely have to make do with their current temporary home in London, a two-bedroom property at the palace.

Come autumn, however, the family will be able to move into their permanent London home, Apartment 1a at Kensington Palace ? a four-story house with a nursery, 20 rooms and a private garden.

PAUL: A union cloud over Obamacare as broken promises infuriate the president?s base

?If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.?
? President Obama, July 2009

As the details of Obamacare become more known, Americans become more concerned, and for good reason. President Obama promised that if you were happy with your health care, you could keep it. As with so many other government promises, this, too, turns out to be an empty one.

Even people you think would be solid Obama supporters are waking up to the more damaging aspects of the Affordable Care Act.

The Teamsters and two other major unions sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi this week, writing: ?When you and the president sought our support for the Affordable Care Act, you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat.?

The union letter continued: ?The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios: First, the law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees? work hours below 30 hours a week. Numerous employers have begun to cut workers? hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly.?

The letter concludes: ?The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.?

In 2010, Mrs. Pelosi, then House speaker, famously said of Obamacare, ?We have to pass the bill to find out what?s in it.? As Americans find out what?s in it, even significant parts of the Democrats? base don?t like it one bit.

Government intervention ends up causing higher taxes or the costs of regulation being passed on to the consumer. Obamacare is no different, and as a result many employees no longer will be able to keep their current health care.

Those of us who champion the free market and understand how it works knew this would happen, even as the president promised it wouldn?t. Now Americans happy with their health care are seeing it threatened.

That is just one aspect of this highly problematic law. We know that Obamacare will cost more than any of its authors predicted, and many individuals will begin to see their premiums go up significantly. Even the White House is afraid of what will happen. Their delay of the employer mandate will delay the pain for some, but won?t help the millions of individuals still subject to the mandate.

Not surprisingly, a recent Fox News poll showed that 56 percent of Americans wanted to be rid of Obamacare. The same poll showed that 55 percent of Americans younger than 35 want the same. I wouldn?t be surprised to see these numbers rise in the weeks and months to come.

Perhaps Mrs. Pelosi should have read this bill beforehand.

There are many significant and even tragic faults with America?s health care system, but Obamacare was never the answer. It is telling that this week some of the largest unions in the country have expressed the same sentiment.

As many problems as we have with health care ? and there are many ? Obamacare now promises to do even worse damage. That is about the only promise concerning this law we can count on.

Sometimes, the cure can be worse than the disease.

Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Homeland Security committees.

Can any tablet OS challenge Android and iOS?

Based on Microsoft's latest earnings report, its Surface RT is a flop. This, in turn, means that Windows RT has failed. But, there are many other would-be tablet operating system challengers to Google's Android and Apple's iOS. Seriously, though, do any of them have a real shot?

tablets
There are hundreds of millions of tablets out there, but will any significant number of them ever run anything besides Android or iOS?

Just over a third of Americans now own tablets. As time goes on, more and more of them will be buying tablets over PCs. By 2017, market research firm NPD predicts that we'll be buying six tablets for every single notebook. Of these tablets, most experts agree it's only a matter of time before Android is on top of the tablet mountain.

That's not to say Microsoft has no hopes for the tablet form factor. I believe Microsoft has a real shot of being a viable third tablet choice if they elect to place its Windows 8.1 family operating system across all devices?PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

Does anyone else have a chance? Blackberry may have given up, but there are many others who want to dethrone Android and iOS. Here, are the leading contenders in the order I rank their chances.

1) Firefox:?Firefox is actually ahead of Ubuntu on smartphones?with its Linux-based Firefox operating system. For applications, Firefox will rely upon Web-based HTML5 apps. It's an unproven route, but as we put more and more of our apps on the Web and the cloud, it may be a workable one.?

Unlike its other Linux-based rivals, Firefox OS smartphones, such as the Alcatel One Touch Fire and ZTE Open, are already shipping. Thanks to its Web browser, Firefox is better known outside of techie circles than Ubuntu and that's where the tablet audience lives.?Mozilla, Firefox's parent organization, has long ?had its eye on tablets?and, partnered with?Foxconn, its first engineering sample tablets have started to appear.

2) Ubuntu:?Ever since Canonical introduced the Ubuntu Unity interface I thought it had the potential to be a great tablet interface. While much of the news lately has been about Ubuntu's efforts to win supporters for Ubuntu on smartphones, Canonical has big plans for the Ubuntu tablet ?as well. Indeed, Ubuntu's founder, Mark Shuttleworth, has promised us that he'll be making a big announcement on July 22nd. I strongly suspect he'll be announcing major Ubuntu tablet news.

I've always been fond of Unity on devices, and I think Ubuntu has a real shot. For now, Firefox is ahead in actually shipping units. We'll see it's that still the case by year's end.?

3) Sailfish: When Nokia turned its back on the MeeGo mobile Linux project and bought into Windows Phone, five Nokia staffers started their own company, Jolla, to keep pursuing an open-source operating system approach, Sailfish OS. Unlike Mozilla and Tizen, Sailfish relies on the old Linux stand-by Qt QML, instead of HTML5 for its apps.

Sailfish is on the verge of shipping its first smartphone in the Asian market. After that, Jolla would be more than happy to ship tablets.

4) Tizen:?Tizen, like Firefox is an open-source, Linux-based mobile operating system that relies on HTML5 for apps. In theory, Tizen has Samsung's support. In practice, it's been an unwanted step-child without a clear roadmap. With its first device, a Samsung smartphone, pushed back from July to the fourth quarter, I doubt Tizen will ever live up to its promise.

That's a lot of potential players in the tablet space. All of them, except Microsoft, still aren't even really ready to compete yet. Perhaps in 2015, there will be a viable third-party tablet OS, but I really can't see it happening until then. In the meantime, Android and iOS will remain the top tablet dogs.
