On her website, Wealthy Single Mom, writer and journalist Emma Johnson walks single parents through the highs and lows of parenting alone, and outlines the steps they need to take to ensure their families are financially secure. Johnson writes from hard-earned experience; after her husband suffered a brain injury, he divorced her, leaving her with their young daughter and a baby boy on the way.
Quite a story, right? Below, Johnson shares with us the things -- quotes, French baked goods and more -- that helped her get through that period of her life.
The Quote
"It was 'You can survive far more than you think you can.' In our darkest hours we sometimes wonder if we will crumble. But of course, we don't. I went through a hell of a time for a couple years -- first contending with my husband's brain injury, the end of my marriage, bringing a new baby into the world, figuring out how to support us financially alone. But then I managed all that -- and then some. I've delighted myself."
The Splurge
"A new bed. A year after my split, I went in for a new mattress and all-white bedding. My ex hated anything white, so I never got my dream linens, and I opted for a cushy pillowtop, which he found too hot to sleep on. Plus, there is something about cleansing your space of something as marriage-specific as a bed! I must say that my dating life opened up significantly after that."
The Food
"Pain au chocolate. When I was very pregnant and at the height of my family drama, I would eat a balanced, healthy breakfast with my daughter, drop her at daycare and head straight to the bakery near my apartment for a fresh chocolate croissant. Each day it tasted just as delicious as the day before."
The Distraction
"Crying. During my darkest, most stressed and panicked months, I kept a cool head, jutted my jaw and took care of business. That was during the day. After bedtime and when my work was done, I took refuge in the soundproof comfort of my bathroom, sat on the toilet seat lid, collapsed into my arms folded on the edge of the sink and sobbed. Every night."
The Work Of Art
"My kids have this little picture book featuring Mary Cassatt portraits of mommies and their children. These tender scenes reminded me of the powerful, universal experiences of being a mother -- and how countless women have gone through all the joys and heartache that come with family. These images helped me feel less alone."
