Skin cells mimic degeneration in Parkinson's brain

A KEY barrier to understanding the causes of Parkinson's disease is a lack of living, diseased brain tissue to study. This may now be overcome by using skin cells to model brain degeneration.

Michael Devine and colleagues at University College London took skin cells from a person with a rare type of the disease and a healthy relative, turned them into stem cells and reprogrammed them to become brain cells.

People with this type of Parkinson's have extra copies of the SNCA gene, which makes a protein called a-synuclein. Overproduction of this protein has been associated with brain cell death. Devine's team found the reprogrammed cells from the person with Parkinson's had twice the number of SNCA genes and double the amount of the protein (Nature Communications, DOI: 10.1038/ncomms1453).

This mimics what happens to those with this type of Parkinson's, in whom a doubling of a-synuclein is seen in brain tissue at post-mortem. Devine says a-synuclein is increasingly believed to be involved in more common types of the disease too, so the work should be more widely relevant. He now wants to use the model to investigate why too much of this protein causes brain cells to die off.

Battered state vows to solve Mexican security woes (Reuters)

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) ? Despite suffering one of the worst attacks on civilians in Mexico for years, the state of Nuevo Leon is undaunted because it believes a radical police overhaul will soon start winning the drug war.

President Felipe Calderon declared three days of mourning after at least 52 people died on Thursday in an arson attack on a casino in Nuevo Leon's capital Monterrey, a wealthy city that increasingly has fallen prey to the ravages of drug cartels.

Hundreds of protesters staged a demonstration outside government buildings in Monterrey on Sunday, calling on governor Rodrigo Medina to resign.

In an interview with Reuters, Nuevo Leon Interior Minister Javier Trevino said the state had a plan to beat organized crime -- starting with getting rid of half the police force, much of which had been corrupted by money from cartels.

"There are some municipalities here that used to have 800 (police officers) and now they have 80. Why? Because we started cleaning up and firing people and putting them in jail," Trevino said late on Saturday. "Then we started from scratch."

In 2009, when Medina became governor of Nuevo Leon, one of Mexico's richest states, the municipal and state police numbered around 8,000, said Trevino.

Today that total has fallen to around 3,500, but Nuevo Leon aims to rebuild the force and raise the number of officers to 14,000 by the time Medina's term ends in 2015.

Still, rooting out corruption in the police has taken time, and the past two years have seen a sharp rise in drug-related killings in Nuevo Leon, notably in Monterrey, which was once seen as a role model for Latin American development.

Many locals blame Medina for the jump in fatalities, and organizers said Sunday's protest was the biggest to date against the governor.

"Impunity and crime have just increased under him," local businessman Juan Romo said, after joining in shouts of "Medina, out, Medina out!"

The situation in Nuevo Leon has coincided with a surge in violence across Mexico since Calderon sent in the army to crush the cartels when he took office in December 2006.

In response to Thursday's attack, Medina ordered a probe into local casinos, saying 12 in Monterrey were illegal and that no new licenses would be issued in the state.

BETTER PAY

Trevino insisted the state government was unfazed by the latest setback and that Nuevo Leon was ready to start putting its money where its mouth is on better policing.

From 2011, minimum salaries for police officers have risen to 14,000 pesos ($1,120) from 9,000 pesos a month, he said.

"If you go and see other states it'll be around 6,000 or 7,000 pesos," Trevino added. "Plus we're paying benefits of 1 million pesos on (life) insurance."

Local businesses and universities have also been brought on board to try and help make Monterrey's streets safe again.

Nuevo Leon's overall strategy, which includes stepping up coordination between federal and state authorities, judicial reform and investment in social programs, could serve as an example for the rest of Mexico, Trevino said.

"It's very ambitious but it's the only way out. You're not going to solve the security problem with bullets alone," he said.

Five Common Legal Issues Faced by Businesses

As an owner of a small business, the danger of crippling litigation should also be at the top of your priorities. Legal headaches, especially in America can take you by surprise and severely hurt your business? bottom line. Here are some of the most common legal issues facing small businesses in America.

As a business owner, this will be one of the most common legal headaches. In America, employees have far more rights than other countries, in the form of unions and reasons for ?wrongful termination?. If you terminate a non-performing employee, make sure he or she signs documents carefully drafted by an attorney upon termination to make the terms of dismissal crystal clear. Letting an employee go without any final termination forms leaves the door wide open for legal actions.

The legal ramifications of alleged discrimination ? sexual, ethnic, age or otherwise, can cause your company serious problems. Make sure your human resources and legal departments are well equipped to handle these issues should they arise. During the hiring process, make sure you are prepared with all the applicants? resumes should allegations of discrimination arise, to prove that you hire the most qualified individuals, regardless of gender, ethnicity or age.

Hold regular meetings to oversee co-worker relations and insure that discrimination on a smaller scale is not occurring between office cliques, or influencing the decisions of middle and lower managers.

Harassment ? sexual, racist or otherwise ? can be a serious problem in an integrated workplace with workers from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and social classes. Regular meetings and interviews with staff will allow your managers to police these transgressions, which should be eliminated quickly through the swift termination of offenders.

Victims of harassment and discrimination tend to attract lots of media attention, which can hurt your company?s public image as well as drain your legal budget. Be proactive and stomp out these problems before they start.

You should make sure that all your company?s employees can legally work in the United States. Do top down sweeps off your company?s staff, using background checks, to identify illegal immigrants with falsified documents. The U.S. government has been known to conduct extensive surprise immigration audits that can cripple a company if it is found to be using illegal labor.

Cutting edge companies in the tech industry often face aggressive patent litigation. Companies often sit on patents for years, hoping that another company inadvertently violates them, to get easy money through patent and copyright lawsuits.

In the product development phase at your company, make sure your research and development teams thoroughly research the patents and copyrights of your current product, to avoid a messy legal battle should you step on a competitor?s toes.

Customers who are dissatisfied can file class action lawsuits against your company, in which they gather in large consumer groups and attack your company over faulty products, services or promises. With enough dissatisfied customers, class action lawsuits can do more damage than any individual or corporation and irreparably tarnish your brand?s image.

Again, be proactive and keep a finger to the pulse of your customers through tech support, online message boards and e-mails. Promptly issue recalls for flawed products and be prompt to address customer issues.

These are only some of the most common legal issues facing small businesses today. Other ones include tax litigation (a whole other topic) and legal disputes with competitors and contractors. Make sure you are proactive in solving these problems before they start, and make sure you have a solid legal team to back you up should you get sued. Good communication in the workplace and a hands-on approach to management is the best deterrent to legal issues.

Moms' smoking tied to psychiatric meds in kids (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Children whose mothers smoked while pregnant were more likely to end up on medications such as antidepressants, stimulants and drugs for addiction, according to a study from Finland that hints at smoking's affect on a baby's developing brain.

While the findings don't prove that cigarette smoking during pregnancy causes changes in children's brains or behavior, they offer one more piece of evidence that should encourage women not to smoke while pregnant, the researchers wrote in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

"The exposure was significantly associated with the risk for all medication use and for both single- and multiple-drug consumption even after adjustment (e.g. mothers' severe psychiatric illnesses," wrote lead researcher Mikael Ekblad, at the Department of Pediatrics at Turku University Hospital.

"These findings show that exposure to smoking during pregnancy is linked to both mild and severe psychiatric morbidity."

Ekblad and his colleagues used Finnish data for 175,000 children born in the country between 1987 and 1989. At that time, midwives had asked all new mothers if they smoked during pregnancy.

The researchers then matched those birth records to a nationwide database of prescription drugs covered by insurance between 1994 and 2007 -- when the children were between five and 20 years old.

One in 11 children was prescribed a psychiatric medication at some point during that period, including anti-anxiety drugs, antipsychotics, antidepressants, stimulants and drugs for addiction.

Of children and teens whose mothers didn't smoke during pregnancy, 8 percent were on at least one of those drugs during the study period. That compared to 11 percent of those whose mothers smoked fewer than 10 cigarettes per day, and close to 14 percent whose mothers had lit up more than 10 times a day.

The link remained when researchers left out babies who were born early or very small, which are other factors that could affect future mental health.

It also stuck when they looked at each class of drugs on its own, and was strongest for stimulant drugs that target attention problems and hyperactivity, and drugs for addiction.

The study is "entirely consistent with a large and still-growing research literature on the effects of prenatal and secondhand smoke exposure on the mental ealth of children," said Michael Weitzman, who studies that topic at New York University Medical Center and was not involved in the study.

"I find it very interesting and very important."

Exactly how smoking may change a growing baby or child's brain is unclear. It's possible that nicotine could affect brain development, or that access to oxygen during pregnancy might be reduced when the mothers smoke, the researchers said.

Weitzman, who said he thought the research was the first he knew of that looked specifically at the use of psychiatric medications in children whose mothers smoked, added that he thought it was "new and intriguing" that depression medications were also linked to smoking.

But the study had its limitations. Ekblad and his colleagues couldn't take into account whether the mothers had been on psychotropic medications themselves, or if they used alcohol or illicit drugs during pregnancy.

They also didn't know which fathers smoked while the children were in the womb, or if either parent smoked after the babies were born, when their brains would still have been developing.

Weitzman added that it can be hard to disentangle the effects of parental smoking during pregnancy from smoking when children are growing up.

"Very few women smoke just during pregnancy," he added. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/odEWLe

Casino Royale Attack: Mexico Reeling From Deadly Violence

MONTERREY, Mexico -- Lorena Villareal Elizondo went to meet a friend at the Casino Royale, a popular low-cost lunch spot, when armed men burst through the door shouting: "Get out! Get out! We're going to burn everything!"

It was only 19-year-old Carla Maria Espinoza Vega's second day at work at the casino when the intruders sprinkled accelerant around the front door and set the building on fire.

Friends and family mourned Villareal, a 39-year-old mother of three, at a visitation Friday, while Espinoza's mother filled out paperwork to retrieve her body.

Mexicans have endured plenty of horrific crimes during their country's bloody five-year war against drug gangs. But the arson in the northern Mexican city that killed 52, mostly women, was a macabre milestone in a conflict that's claimed more than 35,000 people since 2006, according to government figures. Others put the toll near 40,000.

The victims this time weren't cartel foot soldiers or migrants resisting forced recruitment by gangs, as were the cases in other attacks. They were workers or customers who liked to lunch or play bingo and slots in the afternoons in an affluent part of town.

"She was my baby," said Espinoza's tearful mother, Guadalupe Vega, as she waited at the morgue.

"She was like my sister," said Villareal's cousin, Guadalupe Elizondo Gracia, outside a giant funeral home that drew hundreds of mourners to a half-dozen visitations Friday night.

In a nationally televised speech, an angry President Felipe Calderon declared three days of mourning and labeled the attack the worst against civilians in the nation's recent history.

"We are facing true terrorists who have gone beyond all limits," said Calderon, who also announced he is sending more federal forces to the city of 1 million people. "Today, Mexico is upset and saddened and we have to transform this sadness and this grief into courage and valor to face ... these criminals."

Hours later, he appeared in front of the burned-out casino and place a large wreath and observe of moment of silence.

A surveillance tape released Friday showed eight or nine men arriving in four cars and carrying canisters into the building, which was engulfed in flames in little more than two minutes as people tried to flee in panic.

Calderon offered a $2.4 million reward for information leading to their capture, the same amount offered for the arrest of top drug lords. Authorities had sketches of three of the men based on interviews with 16 survivors of the fire, said Jorge Domene, Nuevo Leon state security spokesman.

He also said officials had located three of the four vehicles in the video, dumped around various parts of the city. All had been reported stolen.

Authorities said they are still investigating whether the exits were blocked. But many bodies were found in offices and the bathrooms, indicating they were expecting a shootout.

"They sought places to protect themselves from firearms," said Jorge Camacho Rincon, civil protection director for the state of Nuevo Leon. "They went running to closed areas."

Most died of smoke inhalation and were found clutching cell phones in their hands, a law-enforcement official who wasn't authorized to be quoted by name told The Associated Press.

In the streets around the casino on Friday, people said the latest violence deepened their sense of vulnerability. In recent years, the city has been ensnared in a turf battle between the Gulf cartel and its offshoot, the Zetas, and is on track for record levels of killings this year.

The casino was attacked twice before. In May, gunmen strafed it from the outside. Last month, gunmen killed 20 people at a bar.

"What happened last night was the limit," said a man nursing a Coke at a hamburger stand across from the city's morgue, where families streamed in all night to identify bodies. Like many people, he refused to give his name out of fear.

"We don't know how to protect ourselves or whom we're talking to," he said. "We don't have security right now."

The attack resonated across the country because many of the victims were from the middle class, so far mostly untouched by violence, said Jorge Chabat, an expert in safety and drug trafficking at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics.

"We're talking about an attack on a civilian population of a certain income," he said. "Because who was there was from the middle class, the upper middle class of an important city in Mexico."

Villareal, who had a travel agency near the casino, intended to meet a friend for lunch, but the person had just left by the time she arrived, said Francisco Medina, 41, a close friend and neighbor who also came to the visitation packed with people and giant flower wreaths.

"She decided to stay and eat alone when the bad luck came," he said.

What's the best kind of countertops for DIY? - Home Improvement On ...

Posted by admin | DIY Home Improvement | Posted on August 27th, 2011

My kitchen is pretty small. I have forest green laminate now that I really don?t care for but they are in good shape. I?m looking to replace it inexpensively. I figure my best bet is to do laminate again. The cabinets are white and floors are wood.

Also, should I buy from large home improvement store or find a mom and pop? or shop online?
Thank you all for your help. I contacted the company that does the granite overlay product (which isn?t granite at all) and the price blew me away. And not in a good way. It was over 2 thousand dollars. I can live with the green for now if I have to. If I can do new laminate for just a few hundred dollars then I will probably go with that.

Chosen Answer:

Well,I just redid my laminate counter top in the kitchen.I had VERY little money and I discovered a new laminate paint at Home Depot. They have many shades and they are pretty easy and I have found them very durable.I cook lot and so far so good. I did put an extra coat on them and let them dry well. My color of choice was gray because I wanted the look o f concrete. But as I say they have many colors to choose from. I don?t know about trying to lay down a new laminate by yourself.,I just know the ?glue? is very fast and once the laminate touches it you cant move it around if you don?t lay it straight the first time.Good luck whatever you choose.

MOTOFONE F3, the zombie apocalypse survival phone (video)

You can never be too prepared. Whether you're being chased by brain sucking zombies, hunted down by ruthless killer robots, or -- more likely -- the victim of an earthquake or other natural disaster. There's only one phone you really need, and that's the MOTOFONE F3. Forget your smartphone and its fancy pants features, forget the internet -- when the apocalypse strikes your survival might depend on a durable handset with great battery life and just the basics, which is exactly what the MOTOFONE F3 delivers. Introduced in 2006 for developing markets, it makes and takes calls, sends and receives text messages, beeps and vibrates, stores and recalls your most important contacts, and includes an alarm clock -- that's it.

Of course, these specs describe almost every simple phone launched since SMS was added to the GSM standard. What makes the MOTOFONE F3 unique is that it uses a segmented e-paper display which sips power and remains legible in both direct sunlight and dark back alleys, along with dual antennae for superior radio performance. Battery life is absolutely incredible, with over 2 weeks in standby and several months powered off. Motorola also designed the handset to be light (68g), thin (9mm) and strong -- it's resistant to shock, dust and moisture, with a sealed keypad and speaker (which is extremely loud). The best part? You can pick one up online, unlocked, for as little as $25.

Check out our gallery below, and whatever you do, don't be like our protagonist in the zombie apocalypse video after the break -- don't leave your SIM at home.

Psst... yeah, we know this phone's ancient, but every now and then we like to reach back and have a little fun. And, you know, escape a looming zombie horde.

Regulation Is Settled Between Makers Of E ... - Health & Fitness

The relationship between companies supplying e cigarettes and the FDA has only recently been clarified. Since 2008 and there have been attempts to regulate the industry and block imports but the confusion over jurisdiction and classification has not helped the situation much.

Electronic cigarettes work by vaporizing a liquid which can then be inhaled like smoke and the general belief is that they are a completely harmless alternative to traditional tobacco products and that they can even be a replacement for those who want to stop smoking. These claims are not supported and they are not endorsed by the FDA as smoking cessation aids.

In 2009 a public warning was issued after testing 19 different e cigarette cartridges from two different brands and considering the viewpoints of interest groups. The tests revealed that smoke from e cigarettes contained a carcinogen and irritants found in tobacco completely harmless and one of the cartridges even contained the anti-freeze ethylene glycol. The viewpoint from certain groups was that the benign marketing and fruit flavor would appeal to children.

It was discovered that only one of the cartridges which was supposed to be free of nicotine actually was. Cartridges were also marked as having low medium levels of nicotine but when tested they were found that different cartridges in the same category would release completely different levels of nicotine. This led them to believe that manufacturing standards needed to be regulated.

In 2010 warnings where also issued to five different suppliers that they would become subject to regulation. They could be regulated by the FDA at the time because they advertised their products as aids for stopping smoking which is a medical claim. One company was also warned about advertising their products as versions Cialis which is used for erectile dysfunction and the weight loss aid Rimonabant.

Originally imports where banned as e cigarettes where considered unregulated drug delivery devices but this did not stop the sale of these products. One of the manufacturers who had their imports blocked appealed this decision in court stating that their products did not have to be regulated as a drug delivery device if they did not make therapeutic claims.

The courts agreed with them and the restrictions where lifted but by that time the new Tobacco Control Act had been enacted which amended the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). The FDA now had jurisdiction over tobacco products and all products derived from tobacco and allowed them to control certain aspects that they had expressed concerns about such as the listing of products and ingredients and the standard of manufacturing. Marketing would also be subject to control, for example electronic cigarettes could not be able to be advertised alongside any other products which where subject to regulation such as cosmetics or drugs.

Before products could be released onto the market they would also be subject to pre market review unless they had already been sold prior to February 2007 and where considered ?grandfathered.? Product that where advertised as having therapeutic benefit would still be subject to regulation as drug delivery devices and it is still being considered as to what regulation therapeutic claims should be subject to. Now that issues concerning e cigarettes and the FDA are finally on a firm footing it can only be good for the consumer.

Ah, laptops. Some of us received our first notebooks the summer before college if not later. But times have changed and we're sure for many of the kids reading this freshman year is just an excuse to upgrade from the clunkers that carried them through high school. Either way, this one's pretty much mandatory -- unless you're a serious gamer who insists on a desktop GPU for marathon sessions of CoD: Black Ops, you're going to need a laptop for pounding out last-minute term papers in the library, taking notes in class and posting incriminating photos on Facebook. The problem is, the market's overrun with laptops that purport to be just perfect for the back to school set. They can't all be worth your money, though, so we whittled the list down to a handful of choices for each budget -- and if you're lucky you'll get your very own HP Pavilion dm1z for the pretty price of, well, nothing. Simply leave a comment below to be entered to win, and check out our giveaway page for more details. So wipe off the glasses, grab your clicker, and get ready to jump past the break for a top-level overview of this year's picks for back to school.

Honored Role (part 23): Captain Kelly Peyton Howard ? Yoga's ...

This is the 23nd installment in the Honored Role Series.?

Two disciplines thousands of years old; the profession of arms, fighting for and defending your nation, and yoga, an ancient practice whose purpose is enlightenment and union through physical, mental and spiritual movement and discipline. Both require strength and practice.

fuel-stop_kelly-howard Army Captain Kelly Peyton Howard, a West Point graduate, started practicing yoga in 2004 shortly after her first combat tour in Iraq. A multi-sport high school athlete from Richmond, Virginia, at West Point she competed on the marathon and crew teams. The years of running on pavement took a toll on her knees. Looking for a way to combine a demanding workout with stress relief, Kelly tried yoga.

?From the first Ashtanga class, I realized what an amazing workout yoga is. I quickly learned its benefits, and the philosophy resonated with me. It is about quieting the mind and listening.? Howard said.

In 2002, Kelly graduated with a degree in Political Science and Latin American Studies, and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Adjutant General?s Corps.

Within a week of the Iraq War beginning, 2nd Lt. Howard reported to her first duty assignment at Ft. Hood. The following month, her company commander, executive officer and first sergeant deployed. Put in charge of a postal detachment, Howard had to manage the supply, inventory, training, legal and family support issues most officers do not face until they are captains and as Howard describes, ?leadership-wise.?

The Crucible

Appointed rear detachment commander, Kelly felt as if she had been thrown into a fire. Barely out of the Army basic officer?s course, she concentrated on learning her new role, asking questions, paying attention to details and listening to others. Needing an outlet from the challenges and responsibilities, she exercised intensely. While working out provided temporary relief, she found herself constantly focused on and worried about what needed to be accomplished. ?I was struggling with maintaining balance in a profession that rewards imbalance.? Howard confided.

Believing exercise was merely about sweating, evaluating one?s heart rate, and training for the twice annual physical fitness test, a friend encouraged Kelly to try yoga. ?I was pleasantly surprised. In addition to being a physical workout, it had a subconscious effect. Asthanga or power yoga calmed me and gave me something to hold onto.? She began to study yoga, not just the practice, but also its history and the mind-body-spirit connection. She learned the relationship of the three created feeling of contentment along with physical strength and energy, and a calm, peaceful and clear mind.

A Change

With the strengthen of her personal yoga practice, she found an opportunity to step away from the judgments, labels and expectations of others.

It changed me. I learned if you can accept yourself, you will be more accepting and less judgmental of others. I became a calmer, balanced person.? Howard said.

The Warrior poses or Virabhadrasanas, in Sanskrit, are foundation movements and positions in yoga. The three challenging poses take strength, steadiness and a fierce determination to hold them properly for extended periods. Kelly said to do so one has to have a focused mind and self control.

Captured in ancient texts, the pose honors a dialog between famous and feared warriors from Hindu mythology as they prepared for war. Yet, yogis are know for practicing non-violence. warrior-ii-pose-howard

According to YogaJournal.com, ?We practice Virabhadrasana, not to honor the practice of violence against others, but to fight our own ignorance and ego. What?s really being commemorated in this pose?s name and held up as an ideal for all practitioners, is the spiritual warrior, who bravely does battle with the universal enemy, self-ignorance, the ultimate source of all our suffering. As spiritual warriors we also battle for what is true and just.?

A year after Kelly starting her own practice she attended a yoga workshop with Bryan Kest. Asked if she intended on becoming an instructor, she replied, ?No, I just like his style of teaching.? That planted the seed.

Attending the Army Captain?s Course the following year, a friend asked her to teach a group yoga class. ?From there, it grew organically,? Howard commented. Her practice and passion increased as she became a registered yoga coach. She has since completed nearly 1,000 hours of teacher training and has taught at the Pentagon Athletic Center, Camp Victory in Iraq, and Ft. Jackson, SC. Kelly is registered by the Yoga Alliance at the 500-hour level.

A Bridge to Far

It?s a huge stretch (no pun intended) between Army officer and Yoga instructor. Howard chuckled, ?There are a lot of stereotypes about yoga instructors such as they are all the tree-hugging granola types.?

Deployed to Iraq for a second tour in 2006-2007, Howard served as the operations officer for Multi-National Force Commanders, Generals George Casey and David Petraeus. She was responsible for all aspects of battlefield and theatre travel, and congressional trips. This included more than 75 unit visits across Iraq, numerous extended trips outside of Iraq and meetings at the White House, Capitol Hill, Pentagon, foreign embassies and government offices. All the while continuing to practice and teach yoga to soldiers in theatre. In this capacity she worked closely with Colonel Peter Mansoor, Peteaus? executive officer.

Sage Counsel

A few years later, Howard and Mansoor met at a counterinsurgency conference. Knowing she had decided to leave the Army, Mansoor asked her future plans. She told him she did not really have one. Mansoor shared with her, ?The happiest people in the world were those who found something they loves, and then found a way to make money doing it. What motivates you?? Kelly thought it over.

As she experienced the impact on others through her yoga practice, she became increasingly interested in the growing field of Integrative Health. ?I realized yoga and holistic approaches toward health, nutrition, fitness, and mental and spiritual well-being are where my passions lie. Helping others develop a more peaceful lifestyle makes me happy and fulfills me.? said Howard.

casey-and-howard In 2010, after completing a yearlong course at Duke University?s Integrative Medicine Center, she became a Certified Integrative Health Coach. In the past year, she?s coached more than 35 clients ranging in age from 19 to 73 on a variety of personal health objectives.

Nearing the end of a decade of service and her final assignment as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Army at the Pentagon, Kelly is transitioning to the Army Reserves to pursue her passion of helping others through yoga and integrative health coaching. As she concludes her time on active duty, Howard former boss, General George Casey, says Howard is ?one our very best and brightest young officers.?

Yoga for Soldiers

Early this year, in its first significant overhaul of soldier physical fitness training in more than 30 years, the Army is incorporating yoga into its new exercise regimen. Although yoga has been used as a modality for soldiers with PTSD, the practice is being incorporated to improve combat readiness.

In 2010, General Mark Hertling, then the Deputy Commander for military training and now Commanding General US Army Europe indicated that yoga would be introduced to soldiers at several different basis during a six month phase in period. Hertling said that traditional fitness training often leads to muscle stress, fracture bones and other injuries. Yoga?s emphasis of flexibility will be a safeguard as well as a way for soldier to gain new skills necessary for combat.

In August, Kelly launched Integrate into Great, a coaching practice focused on creating a system of sustainable holistic health?the mind-body-spirit connection. Yoga helps Kelly and millions of others manage stress, overcome anxiety and achieve top physical conditioning.

Are you crazy busy? Yoga is a great way to relax and exercise at the same time. Perhaps it is time to give it a try.

Namaste.

Sudan court sentences rebel leader to death: report (Reuters)

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? A Sudanese court handed a death sentence Saturday to a leader of Darfur's most powerful rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), saying he violated the constitution and fomented war against the state, Sudan's state news agency said.

Al-Tom Hamed Tutu was captured in Southern Kordofan state, where fighting broke out in June between the Sudanese army and groups seeking to wrest control of the region from Khartoum.

JEM, which is mostly active in neighboring Darfur, joined up with a branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) to attack government troops in Southern Kordofan in July as the conflict gradually escalated to include artillery and aircraft.

According to Sudan news agency SUNA, Tutu was also accused of wearing a military uniform with an SPLA badge.

JEM condemned the verdict against Tutu Saturday, saying he is a military and political leader of a movement that the Sudanese government recognizes and negotiates with.

"The movement calls on governments, rights and humanitarian groups and all people who love peace to share their responsibilities and intervene quickly to save leader Hamed from hanging by the racist governing gang," JEM said in a statement.

Southern Kordofan straddles the north and South Sudan, which

formally seceded from Khartoum on July 9 under a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war.

Many fighters who sided with the SPLA against Khartoum remained on the northern side of the new border.

Earlier this month the United Nations called for an inquiry into reports of human rights abuses in Southern Kordofan that it said could amount to war crimes. Khartoum dismissed the accusations as "unfounded.

Activists and some aid workers have accused the Khartoum government of starting the fighting to stamp its authority on the key oil-producing state after South Sudan broke away.

A separate insurgency has raged in Darfur since 2003. While down from its peak, a surge in violence there since December has forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

How to Know a Good Debt Management Plan

By admin |

Credit gives you a convenient way to pay for things, but a debt problem arises when you don?t know how to manage and maintain good credit. If you have to enroll in a debt management plan (DMP) to solve your credit problems then you need to know how to choose a good DMP that will help deal with your debts.

Don?t patronize a DMP that try to enroll you without taking time to review your credit situation. This is a sure sign of incompetence. It?s like a doctor giving a prescription without diagnoses. Sign up for one of these plans only after a certified credit counselor has thoroughly reviewed your financial situation, and has recommended a debt management plan.

Stay away from DMPs that charge you high upfront charges or monthly fees for enrollment. Some will try to get you to make voluntary donations which is just another way of making you pay upfront. These DMPs are just out to make a sale and might not deliver on their promises. Absolutely do not make any payments into a DMP before your creditors have accepted you into the program.

Beware of debt management plans that request for your personal financial information, such as credit card account numbers, and balances without giving you free information about the services they provide. The least a DMP should do is to give you a brochure outlining their services and your part in the debt management process.

A good DMP should have an ongoing training on debt management and budgeting for its clients. It is the lack of these skills that makes most people to run into debts. Therefore if a DMP is really out to help you they will have a program to teach you so that you will not become a perpetual costumer of debt solution companies.

Obama's Deal for the Bankers: Amnesty for the Indefensible (The Nation)

The Nation -- This story originally appeared at Truthdig. Robert Scheer is the author of ?The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street (Nation Books).
?
They will get away with it, at least in this life. ?They? are the Wall Street usurers, people of a sort condemned in Scripture, who have brought more misery to this nation than we have known since the Great Depression. ?They? will not suffer for their crimes because they have a majority ownership position in our political system. That is the meaning of the banking plea bargain that the Obama administration is pressuring state attorneys general to negotiate with the titans of the financial world.

It is a sellout deal that, in return for a pittance of compensation by banks to ripped-off mortgage holders, would grant the banks blanket immunity from any prosecution. That is intended to short-circuit investigations by a score of aggressive state officials, inquiries that offer the public a last best hope to get to the bottom of the housing scandal that has cost U.S. homeowners $6.6 trillion in home equity in the past five years and left 14.6 million Americans owing more than their homes are worth.

The $20 billion or so that the banks would pony up is chump change to them compared with the trillions that the Fed and other public agencies spent to bail them out. The banks were given direct cash subsidies, virtually zero-interest loans, and the Fed took $2 trillion in bad paper off their hands while the banks exacerbated the banking crisis they had created through additional shady practices, including fraudulent mortgage foreclosures.

Yet the administration has rushed to the aid of the banks once again and is attempting to intimidate the few state attorneys general who have the gumption to protect the public interest they are sworn to serve. As Gretchen Morgenson of The New York Times reported:

?Eric T. Schneiderman, the attorney general of New York, has come under increasing pressure from the Obama administration to drop his opposition to a wide-ranging state settlement with banks over dubious foreclosure practices. ?

?In recent weeks, Shaun Donovan, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and high-level Justice Department officials have been waging an intensifying campaign to try to persuade the attorney general to support the settlement. ??

Donovan has good reason not to want an exploration of the origins of the housing meltdown: He has been a big-time player in the housing racket for decades. Back in the Clinton administration, when government-supported housing became a fig leaf for bundling suspect mortgages into what turned out to be toxic securities, Donovan was a deputy assistant secretary at HUD and acting Federal Housing Administration commissioner. He was up to his eyeballs in this business when the Clinton administration pushed through legislation banning any regulation of the market in derivatives based on home mortgages.

Armed with his insider connections, Donovan then went to work for the Prudential conglomerate (no surprise there), working deals with the same government housing agencies that he had helped run. As The New York Times reported in 2008 after President Barack Obama picked him to be secretary of HUD, ?Mr. Donovan was a managing director at Prudential Mortgage Capital Co., in charge of its portfolio of investments in affordable housing loans, including Fannie Mae and the Federal Housing Administration debt.?

The HUD website boasts in its bio of Donovan that ?under Secretary Donovan?s leadership, HUD has helped stabilize the housing market and worked to keep responsible families in their homes.? If that is so, we have to assume that the tens of millions savaged by an out-of-control banking industry were not ?responsible.? And if the housing market has in any way been ?stabilized,? why did the Commerce Department report Tuesday that new home sales have dropped for the third month in a row??

Shifting the blame from the swindlers to the victims is the cynical rot at the core of the response of both the Bush and Obama administrations to the housing collapse. It is a response that aims to forgive and forget the crimes of Wall Street while allowing ordinary folks to sink deeper into the pit of debt and despair. It infects Donovan and many others who claim to be concerned for the very homeowners they are betraying by undermining the few officials such as Schneiderman who seek to hold the bankers accountable.

In her article about the pressure being brought to bear on Schneiderman to go along with the sellout, Morgenson reported that according to an attendee at a memorial service this month for former New York Gov. Hugh Carey, as Schneiderman was leaving he ?became embroiled in a contentious conversation with Kathryn S. Wylde, a member of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York who represents the public.?

When interviewed by Morgenson, Wylde claimed that her conversation with Schneiderman was ?not unpleasant? but that she told him ?it is of concern to the industry that instead of trying to facilitate resolving these issues, you seem to be throwing a wrench into it. Wall Street is our Main Street?love ?em or hate ?em. They are important and we have to make sure we are doing everything we can to support them unless they are doing something indefensible.?

When haven?t they done that?

Britney: If I weren't famous, I'd be a teacher

Yes ma'am, Ms. Spears.

What would Britney Spears be doing today if she weren't a pop star? Teaching! In an interview with PopJustice.com, the 29-year-old mother of two opens up about the career choices she might've made if she hadn't reached international stardom at a young age.

"I'd probably be a teacher," she tells the site. "I love kids, and even in what I do now one of my favorite parts of my day is getting to meet my fans before the show. Especially the little ones. They are always so cute."

PHOTOS: Britney's incredible life so far!?

"I'd specialize in reading and history," she says, adding that her favorite historical period is the 1920s.

So even if "Baby One More Time" had just been a one-hit-wonder back in 1998, Spears says she'd still be "raising my family [and] being a mom" today.?

PHOTOS: Britney's bikini body evolution

Her sons Sean Preston, 5, and Jayden, 4, are her top priority. "I'm very strong in the way I raise my kids and stuff," she says. "So [even if I weren't famous] it would probably be pretty much the same."?

PHOTOS: Britney's adorable boys

If either of her sons ever wants to pursue a career in the industry, she'll let them follow in her footsteps. "I'd definitely keep an eye on them, but if that's what they wanted to do then I'd let them go after it," she says. "I'd just be very protective."

"I wouldn't want them to go into it feeling fearful, and also nobody can really prepare you for this industry and what you experience," she says. "So I'd just have to trust that they have the instincts to know what's right and wrong and help guide them along the way. I think I have the experience."

Would you want Britney as your teacher, or teaching your kids? Discuss on Facebook.

Kershaw wins 16th, Dodgers rip Cardinals 13-2

By R.B. FALLSTROM

updated 12:11 a.m. ET Aug. 24, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Up eight runs after three innings, Clayton Kershaw went right after the hitters.

The 23-year-old lefty won his National League-leading 16th game and Rod Barajas homered twice in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 13-2 victory over the fast-fading St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

"You definitely don't pitch around anybody. You just attack," Kershaw said. "You definitely don't ever want to nibble with that kind of lead."

Kyle Lohse (11-8) was rocked for a season-worst eight runs in three innings, an impossible deficit against Kershaw, who struck out eight in six scoreless innings. The Cardinals have lost six of eight and dropped a season-high 10 games behind the NL Central-leading Brewers with 33 games to go.

Manager Tony La Russa wasn't interested in taking the long view.

"Today was terrible," La Russa said. "Find Kyle and ask him because it was mystifying. They had a lot of good looks."

Matt Kemp hit a three-run homer in the first and Barajas had a solo homer in the third and three-run shot in the fifth for his 11th multihomer game, also giving him four in five games. The Dodgers hit a season-high four homers while winning consecutive games in St. Louis for the first time since July 9-10, 2003, and will go for a three-game sweep on Wednesday behind Hiroki Kuroda.

Kershaw (16-5) is 8-1 with a 1.21 ERA in his last nine starts and hiked his NL-leading strikeout total to 207. The Cardinals threatened twice, but Kershaw struck out Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman with two on to end the first and struck out the side in the fourth to negate a double, infield hit and walk.

"You pick the right day to pitch sometimes," Kershaw said. "The run support, that's awesome. You don't want to take those nights for granted."

Kemp also doubled and scored in the second and needs one homer to become the second player in franchise history with 30 homers and 30 steals. Barajas is batting .381 (16-for-42) in August with five homers, three doubles and 16 RBIs in 13 games.

Yadier Molina and Rafael grounded into double plays to give the Cardinals 139 on the year, by far the most in the majors. Second baseman Skip Schumaker pitched the ninth and surrendered a solo homer to Aaron Miles, who had been the last Cardinals position player to pitch, twice last season.

"I kind of felt like that was my job over there for a while," Miles joked. "I've played catch with Shoe probably about a thousand times so I know exactly what it looks like coming out of hand.

"He's throwing 92 (mph), he provided all the power."

Schumaker pitched in relief at UC-Santa Barbara and probably has the best outfield arm on the Cardinals.

"To give up home a homer to Miles, of all guys, is disappointing," Schumaker said.

Lohse had been 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA against NL West opponents before coming up empty, with half of the Dodgers' eight hits for extra bases. The right-hander had won his previous three decisions.

"One of those nights they just hit everything I threw," Lohse said. "A lot balls that came back over the plate. I wasn't hitting my spots well."

La Russa passed on a chance to cut into Kershaw's cushion when he allowed reliever Mitchell Boggs to bat with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, electing to save his bullpen. Boggs struck out on three pitches.

"You just do the math in the innings that we've got to play," La Russa said.

Notes: Kuroda (9-14, 2.88) has won his last two decisions heading into Wednesday's matchup against Jaime Garcia (10-6, 3.45), who's struggled this month with a 5.48 ERA. ... Cardinals RHP Jason Motte has made 27 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. ... Furcal, the St. Louis SS, made an outstanding play in the hole, going into the hole and making a strong throw that just beat Juan Rivera. ... Kershaw reached 200 strikeouts the seventh earliest date in franchise history. Sandy Koufax has the five fastest, three of them in July. Recalling his thoughts on the milestone after his previous start, Kershaw said, "I probably said I don't care, because I don't. Outs are outs as far as I'm concerned."

What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel Insurance

What is travel insurance and is it really necessary to consider getting one before going any place for a certain period of time? This article aims to provide people with the necessary know how on travel insurance and the different aspects particular policies are composed of. Does the number of people who consider taking a form of travel insurance affecting the relevance of these policies in the eyes of other travelers?

Travel insurance has been designed in such a way that travelers can be financially and medically secure when they go to different locations. This form of insurance can become beneficial for any kind of trip may it be for leisure, business, or student travel. There are many who take advantage of booking a trip and availing of a coverage plan at the same time so that the whole trip will be inclusive of coverage.

Travel insurance coverage can be obtained from travel agencies but these will only be inclusive of limited and short term coverage. It would be smart for any traveler to get his or her travel insurance policy from a main insurance provider than resort to a travel agency. This is because travel insurance that come from travel agents are usually designed for minimal coverage because these simply pass as add ons to a travel package hence the need for cheap thus limited coverage.

Travel insurance policies deliver assistance when the situation pertains to the risks of traveling. Travel insurance can protect the interests of all passengers alike when travel providers fail to deliver quality service. Another situation where this insurance coverage becomes beneficial is when medical emergencies arise and costs are incurred for the ambulance and medical practitioners that will be assisting a person.

]]>

Injury and death are also within the extensive provisions of a travel insurance policy. When war and conflict disrupts a trip, travelers can be assisted by means of a travel insurance policy. Any form of war and terrorism become enough to cancel any trip so it is just right that companies offer coverage for such occasions.

Travel insurance policies also manage the problem when personal items of a traveler are misplaced after they have been transferred to the responsibility of a travel provider. The responsibility of taking care of the traveler?s baggage is often a task which is mismanaged by travel provider personnel. Travel providers have policies on what can be done when belongings are mishandled but having an insurance policy that a person can use will gear the results more towards what would be beneficial for the traveler.

Basically, a travel insurance policy aims in providing a traveler with a form of legal assistance he or she can resort to when the time of need arises. Acquiring an insurance policy can also provide the necessary assistance a traveler may need to escape being duped by travel providers. There are some policies which may include additional benefits in the contract while there are some with fixed provisions.

For an additional charge, an existing travel insurance plan can be extended by a traveler too cover more possible benefits hence offer more security when he or she travels. Having extended insurance coverage can prove to be very useful in times where underlying health symptoms might affect the way a trip goes by. Having additional provisions in an insurance policy can be of great assistance to people whose trip revolves around dangerous sports and the like.

Traveling to high risk countries can also be a separate insurance provision a person can purchase. War or natural disasters are common clauses for travel insurance policies but it would be wise to avoid visiting these kinds of places in the first place. Particular coverage provisions will serve to manage different situations and a person will always be required to pay more for a much comprehensive plan to be possible.

When it comes to certain medical conditions and especially for drug and alcohol induced accidents, insurance brokers may refuse to grant a traveler with the maximum benefits under the policy. War and terrorism too can be excluded from an existing plan mostly to discourage a traveler from visiting the particular locations with conflict. Travel insurance is a means of being secure when a person travels and there are a number of different options a person can decide from.

If you had an unforseen pregnancy complication ? like toxemia, they?d pay, IF IF IF the high blood pressure wasn?t pre-existing, which it probably was.

If the BABY comes early, the BABY flat out isn?t covered. Only the TRAVELER is covered, and usually only for ACCIDENTS.

Travel insurance is NOTORIOUS for not paying for ?health? issues. It?s intended, for a broken ankle kinda thing. NOT for, oh, you had a heart attack because you?re overweight and had high cholesterol.

Travel Insurance question by Martin Mary: What is the best website to buy travel insurance in the US?
We just bought a cruise for our 30th wedding anniversary. We need travel insurance and would prefer to buy it at the best price, but I want to make sure we get good coverage. Need some suggestions, and when should I buy it.

Travel Insurance best answer:

Answer by Teddy Grossman
My wife and I take 2 ? 3 cruises a year, so I buy a lot of travel insurance. On line is the best way to go because you can compare policies better. Your travel agent generally has a relationship with one company and can?t offer you the same variety.

I compare travel insurance all the time. I just recently used http://www.tripinsurance.com and found their prices lower on the same coverage I was buying on other websites. They have fewer policies than other sites, but they do have major insurance brands and several different classes of coverage. Don?t short change your insurance plan. Just a few dollars more can get you much better coverage.

Make sure to buy it just as soon as you book your trip. You tend to get better coverage if you buy within 10-14 days of making your first trip payment.
