Weather In A Holding Pattern
A large area (or ridge) of high pressure is camping out over the Southeast US.? From our nation?s capital to North Texas, it?s keeping the atmosphere stable with moisture trapped at the surface.? While we didn?t see much fog this morning thanks to south winds gusting into the twenties, Dense Fog Advisories extended from New Orleans through Atlanta to the Carolinas.
The established routine this week:? a perpetual south wind carrying clouds, humidity and warmth from the Gulf of Mexico.? Generally, the cloud deck develops overnight, lingers through the morning, then mixes out to allow for partly cloudy afternoons.? This is the pattern in the lowest level or boundary layer of the atmosphere.
The flow aloft is from the southwest.? We?ve been watching this stream for weak impulses to ride overhead and serve as a shower/storm initiator.? One such impulse rolled through this morning and triggered a few showers.? Another is expected overnight.? Isolated showers and storms should develop near midnight and last through the morning commute.? The coverage should remain low near 20 percent.
Pattern Break Down
The current pattern of small rain chances and breezy, muggy conditions will continue through Sunday until the powerful storm system currently on the west coast slowly chugs toward the Central Plains.? As the large upper level system approaches, the southerly flow will become more enhanced and deep tropical moisture will stream into North Texas.? Showers and storms will be abundant rain makers in the forecast scenario starting Monday through Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday morning.
Today:? Partly to mostly cloudy, breezy and mild.? High 77.? Winds:? S 10-20.
Overnight:? Becoming cloudy with 20 percent chance for showers and a few storms.? Low 66.? Winds:? S 10-20.
Thursday-Sunday:? Morning clouds, partly to mostly cloudy afternoon with a 20 percent chance for showers and storms.? High 75-78.? Winds:? S 10-20.
